I tried it out when I first got the game. Never hurt us, but honestly that's a massive waste of propane. You can find wood stoves around the map for safe powerless inside heating and cooking.

MAP SPOILERS BEWARE OF READING FURTHER

- There is a triple manor compound west of West Point on gravel roads, with a lake. On the other side of that lake is a cabin with a wood stove. There is also a shed somewhere if you follow the road south from the gas station in the middle of town, then west. It should be the shed at last house on that road.
- Wood stoves rarely but sometimes spawn in the Riverside Factory southwest of town.
- Muldraugh has a house somewhat central in town directly east of a self-storage compound with a wood stove in it.
- Rosewood is tricky for woodstoves, have not found one there without Rosewood Expansion mod, quickest spot to find one is likely the Riverside Factory.

There are other locations but these are the easiest access ones I have found for each starting town.
im aware of woodstoves

Zomboid WIKI:

Propane Barbecue
Large barbecue model
Propane Barbecue

A barbecue is used to cook food, adding to its nutritional value and reducing the player's hunger. The barbecue can often be found in the backyards of houses. Unlike the oven and microwave, a barbecue doesn't require electricity to run. Instead it uses a propane tank, which can sometimes be found inside other barbecues, tool sheds or workshops. The barbecue cannot be picked up while a propane tank is installed. To remove the propane tank, just right-click the barbecue and select "Remove Tank". To add a new tank, select "Install Tank" with a propane tank. The player should plan for this in advance by having an empty bag or a vehicle, as the propane tank has a weight of 20.
Advantages

Doesn't require electricity, allowing it to run once it's off.
Can be picked up and safely used indoors.

Limitations

Can't use electricity, must constantly be refueled with propane tanks.
Requires propane tanks. Running out means it will no longer function.
Propane tank is heavy, weight of 20.
No alarm/bell, increasing the risk of food burning.

Its something you don't do in real life. Ill pass on it regardless.

In real life, nope don't ever do that.

I thought you meant in game. In game it is okay. Even a campfire inside is okay in game. be careful though. fire can be bad. dont light a fire and walk away from it.

I am having a campfire in a base i have on a server. never died from it, never burned house. Never left it unattended either.

A grill, charcoal or gas will never fume you to death. IN GAME. Yet. this may change in the future if the devs change the code.

GENERATORS INDOORS both in game and in real life are deadly. FUMES.

You can absolutely role play safe and don't grill indoors, but you can without fear.

Now, this is exactly the answer I was looking for!! I couldn't find any info on using them indoors on zomboid. I don't dig around on IS forums. I will test run this on a building next door. Generators I knew about. I like to build a lil "Genny" house without a roof outside to help with noise.

definitely test this yourself is good idea.

load up a vanilla game in debug mode.

cheat in your grills and fuel tanks.

test for fumes.
also test for grills catching on fire, both just burning fuel while empty, and with burned food in them.

debug mode will allow you to test as soon as you load in a new game cheating items needed.
