A bunch of them do nothing different though. They just equip regularly.
Edit: this particular example isn't the best since it is purely cosmetic in both cases. I just picked the first vanilla example that came to mind. So let's take another example; Hoodies. I'm unsure if this is vanilla or modded behavior, but on my end (with 150+ mods) I can wear a Hoodie normally, occupying the Jacket slot, or I can tie it around my waist, occupying the "Torso Ex" slot, which is the slot that Aprons go. The two options affect which bodyparts are covered as well. I'd never wear a Hoodie regularly once I have access to Jackets or Leather jackets, etc, but I regularly wear it around my waist until I find an Apron (and upgrade it with tailoring) which may sometimes take a while.
