i need a little help with the map based storey if you can contribute in the comments that would be nice. Anyway here's what I've gathered:

*there is a exclusion zone that is being patrolled by the military to stop the spread of the virus the rest of the country (presumably America) is unaware of this

*the government Shuts off power and water to stop any witnesses from surviving

* this leads me to presume the virus is human made either by terrorists or government

*the virus spreads via water and saliva

* the initial infection takes place somewhere in the 90s Era

This is what i was able to deduct from the vanilla game I would like input from people in the comments but I would like evidence or at least a grid reference of where I could find it.

Just as a little hinter I might be making a fan based online book that is completely free with this information if I was making such a book it would probably be released with v 1.0 so every bit of evidence is accurate.

If your evidence is used in such a book it will be credited with your steam name or a name you leave in your factual comment.

Im pretty sure the virus was accidently created in a lab, and the test subject escaped, And i'm guessing he either bled to death or vomited everywhere, because it's spread by food wich has blood or mucas on it.

Worth throwing out at this stage that like all good zombie fiction, there's rumours and misinformation deliberately interspersed around the game, so that no-one definitely knows how the outbreak started - I'm sure this'll be even more prevalent when other survivors are introduced, sharing the tales they've heard about how everything went to hell.

That being said, I'm 99.9% sure dragons are responsible for it all. Mark my words ;)

that's not really evidence but the objects in the vanila map do resemble something around the 90s Era but I will add it in anyway

The evidence is clear that it takes place in 1993. It's what the devs have said and it's the default starting year when creating a sandbox game, as well as the year in the canonical survival scenarios.

It's a pretty interesting story! I spoiled most of it for myself by looking up the transcripts for the radio and TV broadcasts online. I did that because the TV in my shack always bugs out after about a week for some reason. :-(

America and the whole world are very much aware of it. The government tries to downplay the situation but the World Health Organization gets so freaked out that they ban all air traffic from the USA shortly after the outbreak, though that didn't stop the virus from going global.

No they don't. We are in the exclusion zone and we have power and running water for months after the military blockade and pretty much the whole world has been overrun. The fact that we lose power and water at separate times indicates to me that this isn't a government plot but simply the last holdouts of civilization crumbling under zombie attacks.

There is mention of 'strange smells' in the area before the outbreak. There are also mentions that the region has been used for various types of weapon tests over many decades. And it is said that there are toxic chemicals in the ground. We don't know if those things are unrelated or linked somehow.

We don't zombify after drinking unpurified water so I'm not sure about that. The government isolated peoples dogs which could mean that they learned that animals are one of the ways the virus spread so fast.

I'm actually a little bit confused. It seems that most people didn't get infected through direct contact with zombies but it spread to them like a flu. We were immume to those effects but we can still get zombified since even the slightest scratch is near certain death. Maybe there are two viruses acting together?

Yes it does. This is probably an interesting time period because it was right before the internet became wide spread. The telecom provider for the region has been down for two weeks prior to the outbreak which led many to believe that the government was behind that and that they knew what was about to happen.
