Your stats go from a scale of 1 to 0, very slowly, behind the scenes. When you reach certain break points you'll see moodle pop up on the right side of your screen indicating the current condition of your various needs etc. Green (from pale to vivid) is good and predictably red (pale to dark) is bad - some moodles are blue or pink, however.
It'll become a lot easier to understand in time, and it helps add to the immersion! It also makes your life a little less busy compared to other survival games, lol.
You can try making a distraction such as leaving one side of the house you are in and then yelling, and then sneaking back into the house and through it, hiding until nearby zombies investigate the other side of the house, and then you can head out and check the other one etc.
You'll figure it out, the game does have quite a lot of depth but each step is relatively easy to figure out, there's just a lot of them lol.
Don't forget you can tweak sandbox settings if you think something is too annoying, I.E you can make zombies have poor eyesight and terrible hearing or straight up reduce their initial or overall population if you want to. Don't have to play on the more hardcore settings right off the bat!
I'd recommend changing your settings until you are more used to the game, you can turn zombies down, or turn their sight/hearing down. You can make them faster or slower etc. You can even turn on starter kit so you start with a backpack, a bag of chips, a bottle of water and a baseball bat.
