Launch options: Forcing to start in 64bit mode from steam icon possible?
I was originally just using the projectzomboid64.exe file from the steam folder to start project zomboid as using the regular steam icon from the desktop would always start the game in 32bit mode.

However now I get an error "Steam must be running to play this game (steamapi_init() failed)."

The game runs fine if I use the regular steam icon or launch from the steam gui. However if I use the steam icon it starts in 32bit mode and I don't always want to have to open the steam gui to choose launch in 64bit mode.

Is there an option to force the game to always be in 64bit mode?

So it isn't possible to play in 64-bit mode without Steam anymore? That's not cool Indie Stone.

As far as I'm aware, this thread doesn't appear to be about launching the game outside of Steam (nosteam mode) but yes, it's possible. After all, the game doesn't ship with DRM.

Oh, if that's the case then I apologize for my misunderstanding. Carry on good sirs:)

Or just rename ProjectZomboid64 into 32 and 32 into wharever you want.

Why would it change the content ?

I havent done it for PZ (no need), but there is no reason it shouldnt work.

Steam shrotcut directs to PZ32, if you rename PZ64 into PZ32, it wont bother and launch it.

Now, after every patch or a steam integrity verification, you would have to redo the thing.

So, this solution is just a workaround, just launch the game directly from steam and dont bother ;D

Yep, you right, didnt work.

What works is adding a non steam game to library (here PZ64) and asking steam to create a shortcut.

It works I had to reset my pc this morning and then it started working again.
I ran it from the projectzomboid64.exe and it decided to work again so I am glad.
It must have been an error with steam thinking it was not running.

It kinda makes me laugh how the dev have not corrected this as its clearly a fault of their doing. I dont get this problem with any other game but this. to think we pay for a game through steam that wont play through steam???

It has already been changed I think. Even if its not I already had changed how I started pz anyways.

This topic is over one year old.
Steam now runs pz64.exe(whatever the full name) automatically on my system, so I guess the problem was already fixed.
