Dedicated Storage
There are several containers in the game, but when it comes down to it, you could find a "one beats all" container with the best capacity to space occupancy ratio and use that exclusively.. that would probably be your best option as all containers except for the key-ring can hold anything (to my knowledge)

Well, what if there was dedicated storage, like a wood plank pile.. that's perfect for holding large amounts of wood planks, either it has a really high capacity but can only hold wood planks, or it has a normal capacity, but wooden planks receive an 80% weight reduction while in the container, so it can simply hold way more of them than anything else.

This could apply to several containers, like the medicine cabinet for medicine, the comic book stands and book shelves for literature.. bar shelves: bottled liquids, fridges: food, etc..

I think it would add a layer of importance to all the container types rather than just filling a base with the same type of container because it can hold the most.

I do like the idea of a themed storage where it can only store specific item types. Because sometimes I wish I could pick up those log piles from a sawmill to use as my log storage to make my base more immersive.

But in terms of gameplay practicality I guess the idea is pretty moot.

Always wanted something like "Container Suitability" like how a First Aid Kit would have very high (90% reduction) for medical items stored inside it, but then storing something like cans of drinks or firearms would only give you half efficiency, like 45% weight reduction instead, and then some utterly ridiculous items such as a pool cue would give you 0% weight reduction because what the hell are you doing, survivor? The mission is over!

Of course, no clue how the game would handle all those extra calculations. I know it's possible to set it so containers can only hold specific objects I.E those mods which add pockets to hunting vests / bandoliers which can only hold loose ammo and magazines etc, but I've heard it's pretty awkward how you do that in the code, since you have to exclude item groups or something? I haven't looked into it personally but it's annoying, from what I've heard.

Definitely would enjoy having more containers that are restricted to certain goods only though, like the humble toaster which can more or less only accept sliced baked goods or something, right? A log holder or plank stack, even a weapon or tool rack, would be very nice indeed.

Similar to the Deep Storage mod from Rimworld?
I'll admit, that sounds really cool. Like, the log piles you can find at McCoy's being able to hold more logs, fridges being able to hold more perishable food, that kinda thing.

Honestly like that idea tbh

Having items magically take up less space when in a particular container sounds excessively gamey to me.

Dedicated storage for some of those high weight items sounds good though. Perhaps taking the form of a wooden pallet you slap down somewhere, which then becomes a very high capacity storage 'container' for specific types of item (things like logs, planks, cement bags, metal plates, etc.) that would logically be stacked like that rather than put in a box. I for one have a huge jumble of logs lying on the floor in my base, something I'd love to clean up.

Hell, maybe down the line they could even implement a pallet jack so that we could move the whole loaded stack around more conveniently.

Seems like a whitelist system would be very useful in that situation, hopefully that's implemented.

Idk, I'm not convinced you would gain much advantage over simply having 1 container type..
if we're talking logic, everything in a med kit is usually designed to fit in a medkit, proper hospital-grade medical kits are designed to have designates spaces for each item, so organising it would be easier.

It doesn't make sense that a back pack can fit like 20 spears inside it just because they don't weigh much, but it would make sense if you had a long weapon rack/box that held long weapons all at the same angle.. it would also make sense that if you were to try and store a brick in there, it would mess everything up.

It would also encourage you to get multiple storage types and organise your set-up.
Perhaps the challenge balance would be the difficulty of actually obtaining those storage types
