We'll post something about them in the near future.
They were in at a time when the map wasn't seamlessly loaded. If you approached the end of a "screen", it loaded the next bit much like in the old Zelda games. The NPC pathfinding would have had to be reworked just for that but since they weren't up to what we wanted, we took them out, as they didn't have much impact on the gameplay.
It might have been nice to have some scripted NPC story mods but that would have meant we'd have to maintain a "legacy" feature just to someday replace it with the "proper" system we've been working on over the years.
If you want a description in a sentence: They were less fun than Vanilla Minecraft's NPCs :P
