Build 41 trapping problem
Hi there I have no idea why I can't catch a single thing in any of my traps, I'm setting my traps right here
https://map.projectzomboid.com/#0.6679431816263791,0.23003220602774596,201.64622814696273

And I'm using what I can find as bait, sometimes berries, sometimes cereals, sometimes vegetables... the place is deserted, there are no zombies roaming around since I play with fixed numbers of zombies so I can clear areas out and I cleared that area with car+siren+molotov weeks ingame ago.

I'm living in the house south of that position the one with the pink room, I'm far away, the traps are baited, there are no zombies and I have no idea why I can't catch anything.

Please effing help me mates

Only thing i could possibly think of is your character being too close to the area you’re trapping in. Other than that, no idea.

I'm under the assumption that you're not aware that trapping in cities in comparison to woods is less effective because bunnies would rather run around in the forest than in "bare" cities in search for food. Same goes for most other animals.

In other words, there is a very small chance to catch things in cities, 5% for bunnies I belive, forests and "deep forests" will net you a higher chance of catching something. Unless Build 41 changed this.

True... but the link he shared doesn’t seem to show being close to anything.

Ah, I missed the link there.

Try placing your traps elsewhere, like perhaps across the road a little bit north-west from that map position, try to get a good few squares into the forest, could be proximity to the road or the forest "closed off" by the road and being near a city. I'm not sure that would affect much however, that part should be good enough for catching stuff.

Again, it's still Build 41, and I am neither experienced or sure if old data applies. Still, it's a pretty low chance to catch anything anyways, could just be bad luck.

Hopefully this link will show you more precisely, should be to the left about 100 meters of the crossroads: https://map.projectzomboid.com/#0.6550540128708963,0.22382626971485695,226.32823082808812

What Snofur said is still true in v41. Another thing is, that not all areas are marked as it should be. But if you can forage in that area, I think it should work.
I dont think berries are good bait to anything.
Does bait get consumed?
Simplest thing to trap is birds. Make Stick trap, and bait a worm. You can gather worms by digging, but its better to forage for fish bait.
There is also mause trap. Which also isnt hard to use, bait it with a tomato. You can catch mice and rats.
Now lets move to animals with some restriction - rabbits and squirrels. You can only catch them from 7PM to 5AM, but they can consume bait even when they arent catchable. For rabbits, I suggest to use cabbage or carrot as bait (carrot is a bit better, but I mostly bait with cabbage). I dont try to catch squirresl, because they want non renewable baits.
Animals(except birds) can escape from traps, thats why its not good to leave traps for very long time.
So, bait your traps at 7PM, go home and check traps first thing in the morning, to have best results with rabbits. Birds can be cought 24/7.

I can literally forage in the area I described AND right besides the house I'm inhabiting...

I thought maybe it was related to the bait? since I don't have a lot of food I'm relying on berries or what I can forage mostly. Does it have to be AN EXCLUSIVE bait to get a determined prey?

What is your Trapping skill level? if it is too low the chance to catch bunnies or squirrels is low as well. Do try to make a Stick Trap and bite it with worms - by far the fastest way to level up this skill.

The only useful bait from foraging is worms for stick traps. You need specific baits and trap types depending on what you want to catch. I'd be surprised if you caught anything with berries.

The wiki has a good list for this
https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Trapping

I mainly do:
* mouse trap with tomatoes for mice and rats
* stick traps with worms for birds
* trap crates or cage traps with cabbage for rabbits.

My trapping is 2, I started with it and I have been unable to raise it
WillieSea Feb 15, 2020 @ 7:13am
As has been said, it is your trapping skill level, and the type of trap you are setting.

A mouse trap and the stick trap are probably the only thing you will reliably catch anything with at level 2.

All traps require that you be no-where near them (60 tiles?) for at least 6-9 in game hours. If you come near them, you will never catch anything and your bait will disappear.

The bait you used does determine what you might catch. It is all on the wiki page.

distance from trap is 75, for it to cath something. People above wrote good info. I thought OP have allready established his farm. Well, I have bad news then. Surviving on berries wont happen (unless you change sandbox settings, to count only hunger value, and not calories). Your weight will drop. Start your farming ASP, plant cabbages, tomatoes and potatoes. These 3 are most valuable vegetables to farm. Trap birds (trap stick) with worms. BTW, another good thing with birds is that they are also common catch in cities. But it has low caloric value. Make more traps than 1. I ussually have enough twine to make 6. When animal is in trap, it makes sounds, so nearby zombies are attracted to your trap, and can destroy it.
Once you test things out with Trap sticks for birds, you can try other traps. I assume you know the recipies, since you have 2lvls in trapping. Make Cage trap if you have wire, if not - then Trap crate. If you dont have your own produce, then bait it with something wiki says its good bait (didnt tried it all, but what I tried - worked). Use mousetraps too, if you have them (they arent craftable, but there is mod in workshop that lets to craft it - DIY Mouse Trap {disclaimer: my mod}).
One more thing, you dont need to look for far away place to trap birds or mice, you can have traps in safe area around your house, and bait traps before leaving on looting runs. Well, those, where you have to go farther from your base, but looks like that all your trips are like that.

Honestly by the pic you showed you should be getting something, I play rose wood most, and messed around with it a bit, went north to warehouses, did not have to go far to trap anything. I had to go a little bit, marked them on road, with can go so I new where to in forest, and I did not have to walk far even from road, and I trapped a lot of birds and rabbits.

Ok I had a car and this was really far from my base, I would drive home next day, go pick up my animals, do not know if it cause of its to close to where you stay mostly.

I had traps close to my base once, did catch stuff, but did not seem to get close to as much as when it was way far away. But then why I stopped, well I got bit.

But then it was day in day over, drive go back home sleep, gotta check the traps, just to see.

Got boring but my tapping skill did get up there.

FINALLLLYYYYY !!!

YOU MUST FOLLOW THE WIKI 100%

You won't get birds if you use cockroaches, crickets or grasshopers as bait ONLY worms (one would think other insects would work but nope)

Follow the wiki bait guide or risk getting ZERO prey
