So you need to get to below 10 before picking one up.

edit:
Contrary to what others say moving a fridge got nothing to do with your strength stat.

empty your inventory and try again

You need a certain lvl of weight to even lift it. You can basically try and grab it without any equipment and being naked.
You can buff yourself by being "well-fed" and gain a strenght bonus.

But its still a fridge, so dont expect moving one around with having a low lvl of overall strenght.

what this guy said. only thing I'd add is that carrying a fridge makes you super slow and drains your stamina superfast. Unless you are dead certain that the trip back to base is zombie free and quite short you'll need a vehicle or you're probably going to die.

I one of my runs I crossed half of the map in CDDA, completely exhausted and with 50kg weight on a 5kg max weight character.

Penalties are capped, it is manageable, just use the woods to lose pursuers.

Edit: It was super stressful.

Same with any amount of weight over a certain amount. You can turn purple carrying bags of junk aswell and end up waddling so you cant escape.

Also, if you're not aware, equipping something in the primary or secondary slot will, most often than not, reduce it's weight considerably.

So get naked, grab the well feed bonus and then pick up the furniture in both hands ! That way, you'll avoid damaging your HP and getting at risk of breaking a bone or something. I died once that way, it's pretty bad.

If you do not run nor fall, it is not possible to broke a bone due to weight, you just lose max % hp and that's it.

I have to try equipping furniture pieces in both hands though, I am planning to get another 40 weight metal shelves (2 pieces of 20 weight).

If you do not run nor fall, it is not possible to broke a bone due to weight, you just lose max 25% hp (or something like that) and that's it.

You lose HP down to 50% where it stops damaging you. You take a bit of extra damage and are more prone to tripping.

OF IMPORTANT NOTE: If you take fall damage by falling 1 full floor or further while seriously over encumbered, it is highly likely to kill you, as being overencumbered magnifies fall damage. A 1 floor fall you might survive with some minor damage can potentially kill you when fully overencumbered.

That last bit I kinda figured knowing how uncompromising and unforgiving the game has been so far.

I was really surprised when I discovered that a vehicular accident isn't mauling you outright.

Did noy recall the exact % but in any case, you should not be jumping from heights, and even less, encumbered. If you keep it to walking, your are fine if you know how to manage the penalties.

Learnt this from a CDDA Youtube video from a guy with 1 fitness 1 health, and tested it myself.

Unless it changed, I have seen people die in Zomboid due to car accidents. Last weekend my coop friend got injured in one, and it was not a serious accident.

Send a letter to the Russian army, I'm sure they have a solution. lmao

Oh I'm not saying car accident doesn't hurt you but they're quite forgiving as far as I know. I never even got hurt below 40-50 mph. Above that, it happened twice but I was doing speed alright and it wasn't from hitting Zs but colliding with the decor. The immovable, indestructible stop sign on that one dark and broody intersection and the very very indignant garbage can in that one picnic area where I skillfully avoided all the picnic tables...
