From str level 5 to level 6 you need 30000 xp. You can also hover your mouse over the level you are working toward to see the xp needed and any multiplier or xp boost you may have

Simply walking around while at 50% or above encumbrance will grant you 1-2 fitness/strength exp at random.
Good luck actually levelling those stats up lol they require 100k+ xp past lv6

The main way to up the fitness and strength stats would be through exercise (assuming you aren't just starting with the strong/athletic and stout/fit traits). The reward for obtaining these stats is huge and can really feel satisfying to achieve on a character who's managed to survive long enough to obtain the benefits. Exercise is the core way to gain progress toward strength and fitness which get easier over time once your character starts exercising regularly to be able to endure longer exercise sessions. You can always just start with the Strong/Atheletic and Stout/Fit traits if you want to get the benefits immediately and just make sure to choose the negative traits to balance it out. But again seeing your survivor obtain the stats over the course of your game is a great goal to achieve and adds to their story.

it takes months / years to gain significant strength in RL. maybe that's what the devs were aiming for. apparently you get bonus XP if you eat high-protein foods as well.

I don't think the problem is with leveling up Fitness and Strength. It is that all the other skills are too easy to level up. By comparison, Fitness and Strength leveling looks too daunting. I actually think they should make other skills take longer to level.

I am playing a game now that has gone on for 6 months. I exercise my character every day for 40 minutes and so far his Fitness and Strength have gone up 1/2 level. If I could find more protein, I would be be shoving it down his gullet.

Sort of. Your Strength is your maximum carry weight before you become classed as burdened, I think it's like 10kg at 5 Strength and increases by 2kg every +1 level up to 20kg maximum. Can be increased further by being well fed.

You can always carry a maximum of 50kg stuff even at 0 Strength or 10 Strength though, after that you're typically restricted from adding more weight.

But yeah exercising to increase your Strength stat will give you a higher threshold before your character begins slowing down and taking damage from being overburdened, etc.

You can make it but it is only viable in looooooooong games, we talking about months and months of grinding every morning or night to level them up. The only way to make it more accesible is either with mods or via config and set values of XP up

A guy says he's been on a single game for six months and has increased strength by exactly half a level, but that's totally cool? Neglects to say what the settings are though... A lot of us do multiplayer where we aren't the ones controlling the settings. Depending on what they are, surviving for six months is outright impossible. And if someone thinks spending that length of time to not even go up one rank is fine, why have levelling at all?

Knowing is EA and you can change vanilla settings can't ask for much else. We still have the incoming next patches with NPCs and professions changes so...

Exercise is a funny one. It's super broken I think, but it's also super irrelevant and is therefore pretty low on the priority list for fixing. It is fair to not have it be easy, it would unbalance things if players could cheese their stats. A good compromise would be to at least let players exercise while wearing backpacks and clothes. That on top of everything else you ALSO need to remove all your gear is the poop icing on a turd cake.

When I say it's irrelevant I don't mean it's fine to have low stats mind you. More like just invest in them as traits for when you're starting out and then forget about it.
