Why are there no basements?
I just find it odd there are no basements. That awkward space under the stairs to the second storey of some houses seems ideal for stairs down, especially, since it's difficult to place items there.

You know...I never thought about that. There really aren't any basements, cellars, or storm shelters in the game are there? Huh...
IIRC there were issues in trying to add those, those have or will soon be resolved so the devs will likely give the map another run at some point and add basements where suitable.

Iirc the map base code has some issues with negative Z coordinates.
But. I've heard rumors, devs working on it.

also - if you think about it - there is likely more complexity in adding below ground spaces than allowing more floors above ground - due to nature of the viewpoint and the cutaway mechanics - and so going down into the ground is likely a more significant processing overhead, as well as likely providing other technical challenges

but i'm sure they are hoping to find a viable way to do it - since we might all enjoy our underground bunkers - and terrifying travels through the metro tunnels like in Cloverfield :-)

Imagine devs adding a fully underground huge portion of the map, an absolutely massive metro connecting the entire city

2
just raise the whole map/landscape to level 1 - profit?

That makes sense; I didn't think of the cut away mechanic, although, they could just change the perspective of the camera views to all black surrounding the basement rooms, and show nothing from above ground level; that is, pending how it's coded.

That would be amazing! Perhaps, it could lead to caves being added in the woods too.

yeah - not a bad idea - might even improve performance when underground :-)
I dream of the time when we can dig tunnels, moats, spiked pits, go underground
And when I can build myself an entire castle from scratch. I want to dig secret escape routes leading to the inside of other buildings where i do my loot runs

What the devs should have done. Is make ground level where the 2nd floors are now. And then basements be on the ground level. Problem solved. No neg cords needed

I can remember watching a youtube video showcasing a Mod for basements. Guess they dropped it. https://youtu.be/ZT7pe2ZrqYc

I bet no one thought of that, You should go write them an email telling them that and claim a paycheck for sure!

Probably because they'd have to add an entire new level to the Z coords that will mostly be empty space, yknow the dirt. I don't know if this game can even understand negative z.
