Also it seems like despite their being 22k players there's barely any servers?
What are you after?
An open random server can give you a mix of really awful humans to play with and then the entire spectrum of some of the most decent fun best times you will ever have. its all there and like you said: RANDOM
Is that the best? Maybe for one person but not another.
Do you and your friends really like not ever being bothered with possible random jerks that try to destroy your fun? Then a private server will be the best thing under the sun.
You can have this game any way you want it. Private. Open. Modded to the gills. Vanilla. And many many settings in between for exactly how YOU want to play. That is THE BEST WAY TO PLAY - exactly how you want to play it.
I set up my server full pvp. open to anyone. Then I just go play like i am in solo and it gets some interesting mixes of players for "good times" to "i hate you" times.
I like the adrenaline rush of running into somebody who may or may not want to be friendly.
Yep, play as you desire. I hosted my own a while back. I decided to go public pvp at the time. Most of the players were nice and helped each other. Don't get me wrong you'd still have players who troll and exploit stuff just like any game lol. Eventually switched over to PVE cause there were desync issues with combat & it seemed easier to keep up with as a long term server that had rules and didn't wipe.. also:
This is true.. I like the tense atmosphere it sets when exploring.. But the reality is that most didn't like the experiences when things like that unfolded. However, if you set it up for some quick games over the weekend expecting chaos then I can see how that can be more enjoyable.
Im pretty sure thats because most people play either with they friends on their own servers or alone in the solo mode. Public servers are great but sometimes a bit specific in what they aim for. The best way to play the game is, try solo, try online with friends and then public. See what you end up liking the most. I mostly play online with friends because thats when I have a mix of everything without having to deal with other unkown players
