Cooking over camp fires?
I am new-ish to this game, so maybe cooking on campfires is possible and I just can't figure it out after 20 hours, but I have a frying pan and a stew pot that I dragged into the forest specifically so I can cook meals out at my base. Are you telling me I can't fill a stew pot with water and boil some herbs, fish and vegetables on a camp fire? Do I really need to learn generators this early and drag one with a stove out to my shack in the woods?

If its not a feature it should be, you could make the "burning" bar fill up faster as a penalty to using a fire instead of a stove so you have to watch it more attentively, but imo theres no reason I shouldn't be able to fry up a fish with some herbs in a frying pan as a park ranger, former scout and herbalist.

Again, maybe I can do these things and I just can't figure out how and can't find anything about it online. Maybe I'm just being dumb.

All cooking appliances (which includes camp fires) appear as a storage container in your "loot" window. You drag items to it and if the fire is lit, things inside it get hot / cook / boil.

I can cook fish directly on the fire, but I would like to cook actual meals with cookware. The kinds you can make on a stove using a pot or pan. :/

Do I just need higher cooking skill? Mine is 2, I figured there would be at least some things I could do. I'm basically tired of eating plain fish and raw vegetables, it would be nice to relinquish some of the psychological burden of boredom in the woods by cooking nice meals, instead of having to hoard a box of crossword puzzles.

There is a cooking section in crafting, which is where you can find just about everything available to you that you can make. Issue is with a system like this it can't predict every possible combination of food. It does do a decent job though I'd say since I haven't played any other survival game where I can catch a fish, cut it up, season it, and cook it.

From what I've read there are plans to expand it eventually. Not sure by how much though. Best you can do right now is make stir-fry in a pan, which is a mix of veggies, noodles, and meats. Not sure if you can use fish in it or not.

You can also make fruit salads. Again, no other survival game that I've played comes to mind which allowed me to cut up fruit for a fruit salad.

You probably have to cut the fish up first if it's possible to use in a stir-fry, which you just need some type of knife for.

This website helps a lot, and from the looks of it you can indeed use fish.
Soup & Stew are available as well... Just needs to be cut first.

Preparing the meal and cooking it are two different things. To prepare a meal you don't need to be near a fire / oven.

Look at the link above for specifics on recipes.
You guys are crazy all you need is hot water

Ahh, I see what I'm doing wrong now. Its done in the crafting menu and not just by putting ingredients into a pot via the inventory.

You can use the contextual right click menu on items like frying pans, roasting tin, pot with water, bowl....
