I built stairs....now what?
I've built myself a cozy little 4-room house out in the deep forest. Haven't seen a zombie for days. I built a stairway and can climb up but there's no 2nd floor when I get to the top. Every time I try to build a "floor" at the top of the stairs or in a square adjacent to the top of the stair, my character walks down and builds a new floor in the adjacent room.

It's like the game things I'm requesting a new floor on ground level and can't determine when I'm attempting to build on the 2nd floor.

Once upon a time that happend to crates but was solved by pressing "R" key, maybe it works with floor panels also though i don't know because i mostly play hobo-style.

You need to go "all the way" to the top of the stairs.

There is 'one' tile of floor up there. You are now on the second floor, and can now place 'floor tiles' on the second floor. Those will be a ceiling for your house.

Otherwise, your still on the first floor, and trying to place anything will try and build it on the first floor.

What he says is accurate. Also, if you build even one more floor adjacent to that single tile on top of the stair, when/if you dismantle the stair the initial single tile won't be destroyed. Otherwise dismantling a stair take that floor piece as well.

Unfortunately this does not work or I would not break a leg everytime I want to make a roof. Sadly I need to build a stair, build the roof, go down and break a leg... then dismantle the stair.

This worked! I was a bit hesitant to step out onto that first square, as I didn't want to fall. Now I've built quite a bit of the 2nd floor for my structure.

(In the end, I did wind up falling and fracturing my right thigh. But I have medical supplies and food storage to get me through.)

I'm enjoying this game. Thank you to the developers as well as the community.

You're welcome (for the comunity part). And that's how I accessed my Perma Base to begin with (see my vids... tour of my base).

Granted playing with second story sometimes bring a few broken bones... but they heal in time :D

trying to build a second floor...I went up to the top and there's no one square of floor there. I just go up, fall, and break my leg.

Can't build a floor on the top of the stairs, my char just walks down the stairs and builds it below.

Ah, this gets me a lot too, there is already a little one tile floor at the top of the stair, you have to walk up to the top of the stair and then you should see the little square at the top that is the first square of your new floor. You can't build a floor until you are standing on it. The view makes it hard to see as it looks like you are walking off the top step onto nothing.

Of Course you have to be careful, that is usually the time I step either left or right and fall off the second floor and break my leg. Six broken legs this current game alone.

nono, you don't understand, there isn't a one tile floor at the top of the stair...I fall immediately after the last step.

anyways, I improvised a way...I build a long bridge from the closest house and connected it to my staircase.

thanks all for answers i had the same problem.

perhaps it would be a good idea to find some kind of better/more intuitive way to do it, pretty sure many players will get stuck with that.

Be careful building on that second floor, too, it's a great way to break your legs. On PVP servers some people will build staircases then sledgehammer out that single tile that gets created when you build the stairs, so that when others climb to the top of the stairs they end up breaking their legs immediately. Really dislike the way this is handled (reasonably we should see whether there is an "upstairs" before we go there) but not sure how they could handle it better.

A 'wobble' animation would work, and if you get trying to go that way, you then fall off. If you stop moving, you wobble back to safety without falling.
That is what I would like to see.

What I don't like is, a rope ladder up to a window, but the floor was removed on the other side of the window, so you fall to your death. I would think I would see that hole and not jump into space...

This would be great! Never seen that sheetrope trap but I don't spend much time on PVP servers and on reflection I'm not surprised it exists. Really any situation where a reasonable person would see "oh hey I'll seriously injure myself if I complete this action" should be visible to the player before the injury happens. IRL someone who saw the stair trap would just walk back down the stairs, and someone who saw that sheetrope trap would just climb back down the sheet rope in 99% of cases. The only reason we don't in-game is because the interface doesn't properly show that we'll be injured if we continue, and it doesn't give us a chance to interrupt the action. Poor design.

I feel your pain, I'm on my sixth broken leg of my current game. Finally finding the Herbalist magazine and making a lot of poultices. I make way too many walkways.
