Sure you might be able to lift the weight of a dozen hammers but without a backpack it's still probably somewhat difficult to carry them.
But, I believe Kajin is more correct, its more a representation of weight and general encumberance values. Otherwise, I could not see any rhymn or reason for the weight numbers used.
Start walking around when your character is over encumbered. It slows you down a bit but will help level up your strength faster. Basically the in-game weight bench :)
Like I said, I personally take a trait for it at the start, as I want a strong character for many reasons. Leveling up any skill without the exp multiplier in sandbox turned up takes a while as well and in a realistic game like PZ I would only expect them to make leveling up strength take time, just like it does in real life. If you keep your character active, carry heavy loads and eat healthy foods in game you'll start seeing real progress though :)
Then take the Strong or Stout perks to increase your carrying capacity. You can get it up to 22 capacity I believe, with the Strong perk and max Strength. And yes, you can make a build to start that way. I've done it several times. But you are going to have to make sacrifices in other area's. That's the whole point. The Dev's don't want people to have Superman characters that can do everything. But if you REALLY want to do that, there are several ways to easily cheat the system and make a God character. But honestly, that just makes the game incredibly boring.
I can confirm this :) And when you take the organized trait on top of being max strength it's crazy how much you can carry and how much extra space you get to work with in your bags/contaners.
There's a few "bad traits" that I have no problem with like high thirst, hearty appetite and slow healer (I'll even take slow reader if I'm playing single player since you can speed up time). I'll pick things that make the game harder and more realistic, so it all works out in the spirit of Zomboid :)
You can easily carry a bat or even a heavy crowbar with chips and some heavier food while wearing your clothes and having bandages ready to go on top of that and still have space for random loot or supplies of your choice. The basics are not hard to carry with the base strength but it you want to start doing real loot runs you're going to need to find a bag, even if it's just the small backpack or a plastic bag.
