the meta is never getting bitten

Honestly i like using guns, but not vanilla like modded cause vanilla guns are trash. But desensitised is very good for early game if you are going for a gun focused character.

Fear isn't anything you should be really worried of, because fear increase only when a zombie get in your field of view. If you keep your eyes on them your fear meter go down and you won't get the penalty. Raise nimble skill to be able to move in combat stance backward and prevent additionnal fear (as long as no new zombie keep coming).
Also as time pass the fear meter go down faster. And extreme panic prevent you from being bored (not super useful tho).

Gun are quite bad for a few reason; they require ammunition that aren't exactly available in large quantity, they require skill up otherwise you will miss (so a upfront ammo cost) - forcing you to level up in almost melee range for the first few level, gun can be required to "rack" them depending on the condition so it can fail at the most required moment; and finally they make a damn lot of noise.

That's quite a heavy price. But if you can afford it that's also the only price you can pay to have a get out of horde card and make your way out of a difficult situation. Most of those situation can be solved with any car tho.

And unless you are greedy, after played this game for a while you should learn to get back before you are in that kind of situation.

Or you can be someone smart and add mod so guns are actually decent.

Not really, no. Desensitized is great for defending yourself against a moodle that is only really a problem when you're trying to sleep. An argument can be made that panic reduces accuracy and crit chance when fighting zeds, but honestly there are so many factors that go into your damage/crit chance/accuracy that you should be far more concerned with things like fatigue or endurance loss than panic. Generally not worth it.

If you're going ONLY for guns yes

For general gameplay it eats far too much with that steep trait cost to be that worth while. Police Officer is better overall with the boost to nimble which helps all combat including firearms. Once you get to 150 days you'll be at the lowest panic generation so if you're in a game for the long haul that's your best bet

You can simply take beta blockers to cope with panic from zombie crowds.

Every build is viable, have I ever used Veteran? Never. Not even in multiplayer. Cop is better. It's actually surprising how much damage you can do with only +1 aiming. Just stand still.

veteran is only usefulif you wanna level up aiming/reloading.

brave/desensitized you get for free after a while.

Pretty sure you don't get those after a while... That is a mod, if you play with mods ofc

But no, veteran is not meta, in fact I personally almost never take professions because the extra points can be well worth it. Fit and Strong are two traits I take up every time. Lumberjack is one of the few good professions (especially if you like axes) Apart from that traits like carpenter, engineer or mechanic aren't really worth it. Because you can easily level them up by reading books, watching VHS tapes or life and living during the first 9 Days.

you are right you dont actually get the traits in vanilla,
but the effects the longer you survived. which is nearly the same.

You do get desensitized over time in vanilla. Just wanted to point that out. I've been playing this game for over 10 years. I think it was something like 3-6 months for full desensitization if I'm remembering correctly. I specifically never pick veteran for this reason and I always lose my panic moodlet eventually.

OP. I recommend using police officer over veteran. It uses less points and you'll still be effective with firearms. In 3-6 months you will lose the panic moodlet from zombies anyway.

Veteran is good for roleplay and having a head-start in the beginning game. It loses it's value as time goes on when compared to the other professions.

Lastly, to anyone saying that panic is not a significant debuff, you are seriously mistaking! The difference between full panic and no panic when shooting a firearm is night and day. It's like comparing a trained shooter to a shooter with no thumbs.

The rate at which your panic drops increases the longer your character survives, but I don't think you can get panic immunity that way.
