How do you increase max carrying weight?
I've looked around for an answer but couldn't find one for this specific question, with everyone saying to either download a mod or use bags. I already use bags, but I was wondering if there was a way to increase my character's max carry weight without mods.

I'm assuming it has something to do with strength and exercise, right? If so, what exercises would be best for increasing carry weight?

Yeah, more strength will increase carry weight and so does being well fed.

The organised trait increases the capacity of containers so it boosts the capacity of your bags, car seats and trunk. This helps to increase the amount of loot you can carry.

Get stronk. Hold more. Buff up your weak, noodly arms.

You can't increase carry weight, even someone with 1 Strength can hold up to 50kg in their inventory, same as someone with 10 Strength. What you can change is the maximum amount of weight you can carry before your character begins feeling the effects of being overburdened, though. I'm a little rusty but I think a character with 5 Strength (default) can carry 10kgs of stuff before feeling the burn, and each point of Strength above 5 up to 10 (max) adds +2kg to that capacity, so someone with 10 Strength can lug around 20kg of stuff without feeling any burden from it. This is temporarily reduced if your character is hungry, can't remember if it's temporarily increased if your character is well fed though but even if it is that would be hard to maintain for long anyway.

Bags can allow you to hold extra stuff by having weight reduction of items inside when worn, so a bag with 20kg of stuff at 50% reduction would allow you to carry an extra 20kg of gear with you while only applying 10kg towards your 50kg limit. It only applies when worn though, which can make picking up a huge backpack full of goods you were recently wearing impossible due to holding it in your hands taking you over the 50kg limit - this is also why modding a backpack to hold 50kg or more of goods is a bad idea in most cases, especially if you drop it somewhere you can't access the stuff inside it.

I don't know if it's possible to increase characters maximum carry load beyond 50kg with mods. I haven't seen a mod that does it, although admittedly I haven't looked, so I can't say for sure if it is or not, really. I imagine it'd be a popular mod if it was.

Most people including myself tend to grab mods that increase the amount of bags you can carry on your person (adding satchels you can wear with backpacks, tactical rigging and chest carriers, waist pouches, even pocket bags for your legs etc) while also including vehicles that have huge capacity I.E military trailers. Not quite the same thing as having higher standard default capacity but it works pretty well.

There are also mods that reduce the general weight of various items too, such as one that reduces the weight of planks and logs.

You can also consider the "Organized" trait, which doesn't give you additional carry capacity but it does increase container capacity (not personal inventory though, if I recall) by something like +30%...can be pretty potent with vehicles that already have huge capacity anyway.

Actually it does give you carry capacity, albeit indirectly, as the prerequisite to gain carry weight is to have a container you can carry. (Plastic bag, garbage back, backpack etc.)
If you get the best bag which has with organized trait like 38? carry capacity (military backpack). It also has 86% reduction so you can carry 38 pounds that will weigh you down for 5.32.
You can also put the small bag on your belt, for 3 more extra pounds, and you can have in each hand a military backpack, and have some items in your inventory. This way you should be able to carry around 100+ pounds with ease.

Strength helps. If you don't mind using mods there is one I use, but only on car trunk and containers at the base, but you could use it in your backpack too if you wanted. I think it was called Inventory plus or something like that. With a pencil you can craft these items with -50 or -100 carry weight, put them in containers and you have more space. My truck holds over 1000 capacity, more if I wanted and my base containers use this too to fit an additional 300 weight in each one.

Hmm, never knew it affected bags and things. I always thought it only affected furniture and vehicles etc. Neat.

Even more reason to always take that trait!

Ya it's always a grab for me every playthrough. You can get over 100 Kilos of crap into a Metal Box with Organized and 38 Kilos into a Military Backpack. Hell, even the Fanny Pack is affected so you can carry 2 Kilos instead of 1 like normal. I can carry a lot of stuff in those small Fanny Packs like Scissors, Screwdrivers, Pens, Medical items, and still have plenty of room for Ciggies

Fanny pack is 3 weight if i recall well. 2 is the basic. But i'll have to check.
It also helps if you start with a 0 str char, and this bonus will last throughout the game once you gain some str as well.
You go inside the gigamart with a few bags, get them all filled up, and you can get your loot out faster (less times needed to get in and take the stuff out, then without the trait).
Since it also affects the vehicle store capacity (26 on seats for instance), you can place certain bags on the seats as well.

I use the fanny back for a saw and hammer, with enough room for a couple of rags. It's the only fanny pack I ever found. I would've liked a 2nd one since you can wear two of them.

Def wasn't aware you could wear 2. Currently I have 8 of them I use as backup in case I lose my current character into a hard to get place.

On topic:

Organized lets you carry more into containers (including cars and bags).
Strength increases how much you can carry before getting the burden debuff.
Max carry of 50Kg cannot be increased ever.

Does putting stuff on your belt apply the "when equipped" weight reduction to it? Like when you hold weapons etc in your hands as opposed to storing them in a bag or inventory. How about when a big weapon is attached to your back as well...does it even apply weight reduction at all?

Wondering if the back + belt is purely for quick access or if it's useful for weight conservation.

There is some weight reduction for items on your belt and back but it's pretty low.

Again both true and untrue regarding the 50 pounds, kg-s whatever the weight system they use.
Because your main inventory's limit cannot be surpassed, however if you wear a military backpack fully packed, you will carry 38 pounds, which in effect in your main inventory page will be like less than 6 pounds. So you can also place some stuff in your fanny pack, be wearing clothes, and still lug that generator with you, so you can have around 100 pounds on you. Just cannot surpass that limit in your main inventory.
