I will never set myself on fire while cooking fish (IRL)
Honest.
I know how to do this - open fire, microwave, baked, fried - it's all good, done it for years AND NO SCARS - NO FATALITIES (unless you count the fish)

So, a month an a half into a great location - I get lazy cooking a nice big pike - and discover that even in rain, you can can set yourself on fire. I didn't see a right click - menu "Stop drop and Roll" option. And it might have taken a second or two, but I'm dead, anyway.
This is why you shouldn't get attached to your characters, I guess.

Sometimes I wish this game had a save feature.
This,
Sucked.
Because he'd uncovered half of Riverside, was levelling like a ninja - killed almost 400 zombies. But dies cooking his bedtime snack.

Yeah, kinda of butt hurt over yet another stupid death - but also, cool that you can set yourself on fire if you don't pay attention.

Is there a way to put yourself out? Because I doubt I will learn from this the first time.

Keep a fire extinguisher by your firepit just in case of accidents. You should be able to use it to put yourself out.
It happens.

I need to test it out but running is supposed to put out the flames.

Having water in your main inventory and right clicking on yourself should give you the option.

To put yourself out with water/extinguisher:
