Water shut down too early
Hey guys, i'm quite new to this game, so still getting familiar with it.
I've started a new game in Rosewood (started next to elementary school) and the water was shut off so early – on july 11 (started on 9th; the electricity is still on, thanks god). Could u help me what should I do? :D

I know there's a possibility of crafting water collectors (planks, nails and garbage bag), the struggle is that i don't have needed skill (carpentry 4). Yes I know about the TV shows, but that won't be enough to get it on lvl 4 I guess?

So now I'm totaly dependent on what i find in water sinks bath tubs and toiletes while looting until I find a place to settle down and get carpentry on lvl 4?

Thank u guys and gl with surviving and not dying in the first days!

Water/Electricity shut off is randomised every new game, you just real unlucky. Best way to level carpentry is to read the skill books for a boost, then just start dismantling all the furniture you dont intend to keep/in other houses. Large double beds give a large amount of XP, you'll get to lvl 4 in no time :)

TV show can get you up to 5 or 6 (and really depend on the multiplier if you put more than 1x you can max out skills just with tv show) in a given skill if the show keep going in a particular skill and if you read books the worst case scenario is you get only one show, you can get your carpentry up pretty fast if you have tools to cut down trees, make planks and in turn make some wooden crates, walls etc

Don't worry about it too much. There's lots of water in bathtubs and such in the meantime. Also, don't be afraid of drinking directly from the river or rain collectors you find; they won't kill you, just make you feel a bit queezy.

It's very important NOT to bottle the water and drink it, though, as that will actually kill you.
I guess the logic behind this is that bottled watered from a tainted source would have multiplying bacteria and be more dangerous (or it could just be a bug lol).

There's also a lake in the south. Great if you want to farm during winter and fish, you'll never have to worry about food and water again.

Yeah it isn’t the end of the world. Just make sure you hold onto all the water bottles you find. As well as empty buckets and cooking pots - throw those outside to collect rain. Bring home a water dispenser cooler thingy. I tend to end up with like 8-10 buckets so I barely even need to build a rain collector half the time, but always do just because …. Extra water.

the water did not shut off early...
No matter what preset difficulty setting you play on water and electricity both shut off randomly within 0-30 days upon starting. it is random. so there is a VERY SMALL chance both water and electricity are off from the very start.

The only difficulty where this is different is if you are playing on Initial Infection where water shut off is within 6-12 months after you start.

Okay, thank you guys for those comments! Gonna try the lake in the south probably... in the next game. I've underestimated the elementary school and got killed, haha.

yeah all you need is 1 pot and 1 knife or screwdriver, then you can get infinite water.
But it does require alot of foraging for the sticks and ect needed to make a campfire and ect.

OP, from a new player to another, do NOT start in Rosewood. Seriously, it's a bad idea for multiple reasons. Not that the city's bad but I can't really tell you all the details without spoiling you some surprises.

Instead, start in Muldraugh. It's much much better for a new player. You'll find more things too. There is a "little bit" more Zs in Muldraugh but if you don't rush in & use stealth (C key) you'll be perfectly fine and you'll thank me later.

Best of luck and have fun !

PS :
Also, it's useful to know that most people, probably 80% of players, are using a lot of mods. This game isn't finished and a lot of good people in the community created mods to add things in. More vehicle, more weapons, more clothes, etc. Most of them did a great job of balancing things out just fine. You'd be best to add a few mods too if you haven't. If you want, I can give you a list of the ones that are the most useful / balanced / make more sense to have.

Jethro is correct:

Collect every cooking pot and saucepan you can find, and leave them outside your door on the ground. Whenever it rains, they will all fill up with water quickly, then you can build a campfire and boil the water to make it drinkable.

Collect as many bottles as you can as well, and pour the clean water into the bottles for storage so you can use the pots to get more water. If you can find a water cooler, you can store a lot of water in there, and you can pick up the (empty) cooler and bring it back to your base. Water coolers are a bit rare but not very. Check schools, offices, warehouses, light industrial type buildings.

This method can be started immediately with no skills, and with a dozen or so pots you can get enough water to live on easily. You can even do farming with this as your water source if you want.

(I play unmodded Apocalypse)

also... search offices. water coolers are common spawns with 12.5x the water a sink holds... and you can carry it home. lasts aaaaaages as long as you give up washing :)

In my game it shut off pretty quickly, before I had even realised. I was just washing some stuff and it stopped working. So that's it for water, just what's left in the pipes in places I explore. Then later realised I can just pickup some water coolers and take them home.

Use buckets, pots etc to catch rain until you get level 4 carpentry.
