before all that I was already using voicemeeter and I had no such worries
I just wish it was like before
Because that's what I do and I had the exact same problem and was going crazy trying to solve it. The solution I finally found was going into Sound Settings > App volume and device preferences and manually assigning the output for Project Zomboid(needs to be running to show up here).
