The penalties become smaller as you increase "Regularity"

Yes it's worth it if you have the time to exercise and you're in a safe area. You can speed up strength training a bit by eating high protein food, like just straight animal meat or jars of peanut butter. If you eat high protein foods you actually get more strength xp per tick when exercising, and it increases the more you eat. For example, doing pushups normally gives you 4 xp per tick, but you can get this up to 6 xp with a protein diet. This trick is even more powerful if you have barbells. I think it gets up to 8 or 10 xp per tick if you use equipment. Unfortunately this does not work for fitness though, and as previous poster mentioned, fatigue lessens with increased regularity. At max regularity you should be able to do a full 60 minute exercise and have no or only mild pain as a result.

I don't really think it is worth doing unless you expect to be surviving for an extremely long time. I started with 4 fitness on a character, did exercise every day for almost 3 months, died with 4 fitness.

Yeah fitness is definitely painful and not worth it. I wish they would add fitness equipment like a treadmill or something, or at least make xp gains from sprinting and running less rare and random. Or similar to protein diets for strength training, maybe make eating nutrient rich foods give you fitness multiplier.

I've tried playing the game with increased xp multipliers, but unfortunately those multipliers apply across the board and the leveling system is super unbalanced so if you go messing with xp multipliers, some skills like foraging and carpentry level too obnoxiously quickly even without books that it kinda ruins some of the fun.

Has to be at least 30 - 60 mins per day
Best to do it right before you sleep

Yeah, I usually ran it for an hour. I did miss a few days but regularity was pretty high.

I find the best time to be around 4pm. I usually put my character to be around 10 or 1030 pm and if i exercise at 4pm, the fatigue pops up around 2am and disappears just before I wake up.
If you have a protein rich diet you can increase your multiplier by up to 150% It's like reading a book but with food

I am usually not too worried about fatigue as by the time I make breakfast, and drive to location its over

Only way to exercise and actually get skills is to just grind one skill for a few months. Do nothing but sleep, eat, and work out for like 2 or 3 months and you can get to around level 8 in each if you have normal 5 fitness and 5 strength.

I worked my strength fairly hard on my old character. For me, the amount of time vs. the gain/reward wasn’t nearly worth it. I started as a burglar so I believe I already had a strength and fitness buff. Too much of a grind for such very little payout, IMO.

The sad truth is that you're probably going to die before you even see high level fitness so in that sense maybe it's not even worth it.

I feel like exercice is only worth doing if you don't have much zombies to kill (unless you need to spend most of your days doing stuff in your base or else and don't have time to go far away from your base). Hitting zombies grants both fitness and strenght, and will also increase many other skills (weapon ones mainly, but also nimble). It's also more useful to clear areas from zombies.
Strength exercises are worth it, if you are doing a serious attempt with a weak or feeble character. Makes for an interesting early game when you really have to watch your inventory and fight only one or two enemies at once. Fitness is a much bigger pain because of all the downtime you need for resting and avoiding exhaustion during fights and even while walking if you have other debuffs.
Personally i just max out fitness and str when building my character its better than spending hours upon hours working on just to get a single level.
