Also you can right click and select extinguish option ifyou are carrying water...but its faster just to sprint.
Sometimes you need to die to learn what to do or don't do next time.
A would say keep a bucket of water in the campfire inventory, but instead I'm say learn to avoid stepping on fire.
My current game includes:
Perma winter
⚡ Shutoff on day 1
Here they come (horde event mod)
So early days I must setup campfire, plus when I have to keep moving, antique oven is not a solution to heat myself up.
The best thing you can do, is to learn from that experience, create a new character and give it a go.
If you want to experiment with fire, to develop your fire extinguishing skills, you can make a test -debug game to light a test toon up, and try to find all the options you have available to you for extinguishing fire and what option is best for you.
My past experiences with open flames makes me very very cautious and precise with my actions near it. Whether it is me and stupid mistakes, like sprinting up to a fire and then the character does an extra few "slow down steps" right into the fire. Dead. Or a zombie walking into my fire while I'm over at the snack bar fixing up a stew. Dang thing burns down down the entire camp. BOO zombie. Boo. Zombie go home.
Carry on with a new character. I'm sorry about the last one.
Lucky for me, the early game fresh out of the creation screen is the most fun for me, new guy with nothing. Go survive. I love that part the best. Soon the 1 year guy (and the 3 month guy and the 2 day guy) just a memories of learning experiences.
PS, I doubt they will "fix" that, but you can mod it to how you like, with the Indie Stone blessing of full mod support right at the core of the game. Make this game yours. That was a conscious decision from the get go, they want you to make the game exactly how you want it. There are plenty of "I burned up and am mad" discussions here, so maybe your mod would really help out those others seeking a tweak to the fire burn mechanic.
Right click select extinguish
Don't play with bombs indoors, least if you value the loot.
