I Wish I Knew About Stone Axes in the Beginning

Apparently after foraging chipped stones and tree branches (and making ripped sheets), Stone Axes can be crafted for tree cutting, which is super useful along with Saw for making wooden Planks. I was annoyed when I found no axes at the hardware store in Riverside (well at least found some boxes of nails), but with some trusty Stone Axes, I've been able to encircle my base location with wooden walls within several days of learning about Stone Axes.

Fortunately, I fought a lot of zombies before learning about Stone Axes, leveling up my Maintenance - that helped reduce the breakage rate.

An avg tree worth 2 logs, and needs 16 hits with stone axe. Without maintenance skill, you usually can chop 1 tree / axe. ± 1-2 hits.
The main problem is you just can't find that many chipped stones (and stones since I can make chipped ones from common ones).
But. After you hit maintenance lvl 2-3, u can chop 4-6 trees with a single stone axe.
For me, finding stone / chipped stone is more frustrating.

Yup, they're very handy. I used to use Chipped Stones for creating Crafted Spears, but now I save them for Stone Axes in case I need an emergency axe. Besides, there's so many Kitchen Knives and Hunting Knives stuck on zombies that I'd have little use for them otherwise.

With str 4 you can get a max of like 4 trees with that. But that means you roll very very like, but on average yeah it is two, as u usually will have one tree cut then it breaks or sometimes three. And i think axe skill 3?
(STR and AXE skill seems to also affect it, so it is NOT a bad idea to kill some zombies to increase maintenance and axe skill with stone axe, then from maint 2 switch to a normal axe to kill zeds to increase both.)

Ahh, it's probably my Axe skill (L0).

But I find Axes to be somewhat rare that I would never think of using one to kill zombies with it lol.

If you're in riverside, go to the toystore. It's on the south side of the street, across and slight down from enigma bookstore.

Go to the back and search the big cardboard boxes there. You'll find the same kind of tools you'd find at a hardware store, for some bizarre reason.

I've had firemans axes repeatedly come from those boxes, in multiple playthroughs.

agreed on never using axes for zombies! no, save for tree chopping. The fireman's axe chops full grown trees in five hits. It took about a dozen per tree with the little handaxe I had before (found that stuck in a random zombie)

Once you get some levels into Foraging you can find a good amount of Chipped Stones

When you open the Foraging Menu it shows what Foraging Zone you're in. Road Zones are the best to find Stones in so if you want anything Stone that's the place to go

If you level up your Axe Skill your axes last longer when Chopping Trees

I've been there before, but I don't recall finding anything good.

I'd actually prefer using Wood Axe for trees since it looks like it was designed just for that purpose (not that it sucks as a Weapon, though). Sadly, those are rare. I've only found 2 and one of them was lost deep in the forest leading to the hidden military base when my character died. RIP. The other is in my main Riverside base and I'm currently in Muldraugh.

Axes are replenishable, beside the wood axe, since you can meet zombies with an axe in the back. (And not hand like the song goes:D)

Just look for them separate it from the horde, kill loot the axe and leave. Is how i used to get my katanas, i stop if i see one:D
