For Tree Branches, you can find them in Forest areas, but anywhere where there's quite a lot of trees should suffice.
If you click on the magnifying glass near the upper left corner and hover over the image that pops up, it'll tell you information about the area you're in. You're looking for "Firewood" and, more specifically, its rarity in that area (you want to see "Common").
You can also try setting the search focus to Firewood, but not having it set won't prevent you from finding a fair share of Tree Branches.
More importantly, use Crouch or hold the aim button to gain a bonus for searching. Crouching gives a 10% bonus, aiming is 33% but, IMO, it's about the same if you fast-forward while crouching because you can cover a lot of area more quickly.
Alternatively, you can use any almost any knife (or machete) to cut down Bushes. Just right click on the bush > Remove Bush. When you do this, there's a chance that a Tree Branch will drop. This is the faster method.
