Are you a bow or a crossbow type of person?
I'm a bow..!

Clearly bow people are better people than crossbows people.

Crossbows have more stopping power and are easier to learn, but take longer to reload than a trained archer with a bow of any other kind.

If you had to arm lots of people in short order and had the choice, crossbows are better. If it's just for you and you have the time to invest in training yourself up, then it's up to personal preference.

Im a gun person.

There is nothing better then good old .357 Colt Python or S&W .44 Magnum - especially with hollow point.

Ha! Bows and crossbows are silent and you can make ammo. Gun people are scrubz!

Imma dickbutt

But regarding OP question, bow all the way, the only down is that bows require more skills, but then you have, faster reloading, less weight, better movement speed so shoot and run is viable.

Making an arrow/bolt requires a certian type of wood because not all are good for them, you need good feathers to make quills and you need to have perfectly straight shaft which requires fire hardening and straightening - so yeah good luck with making those without proper knowledge and experience. If arrow/bolt isn't perfectly straight you will miss - a lot.

Crossbow, personally. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. A fairly light crossbow could potentially be pulled one-handed and would be almost as fast as a bow, honestly. Assuming that you're taking the time for aimed shots. A crossbow does take some strength to pull, but so do most bows. Crossbows require a much smaller physical space to draw and fire, and bolts are usually smaller than arrows. In addition, crossbows are far, FAR easier to aim than bows. Also, crossbows are easier to mod. You CAN attach a flashlight to a bow, but it will probably mess up the aim quite a bit. And good luck putting a bayonet on a bow. Tacticool isn't for everyone, but *I* think those are two useful mods for any ranged weapon which takes both hands.

I would say... if you're VERY skilled, use a bow. If you're anything less than VERY skilled, and are moderately strong, use a crossbow. I'd take both, and use them for different targets.

Also guns are nice, I'll admit. They also SUCK in most zombie apocalypse scenarios, since most zombies are very much attracted to loud noises. Guns are LOUD. Out in the open, sound travels quite a ways. If you are always using guns, expect to be swarmed frequently. Unless I'm in trouble, I'd prefer the weapon which is relatively silent, and the ammo which is usually reclaimable.

id rather just throw rocks at their heads, with a good enough throwing arm even a rock can cause a lethal head injury, hell im pretty sure any pitcher in baseball could kill if they replaced that hardball with something more solid, say for example a small rock.

and rocks? nevermind reclaimable i can bet that i cant get further then 5 meters away from an apropriately sized rock in almost any part of the world where i would need one.

so yeah, where is my pitching skill? i got a thousand rocks to throw so i might as well get on it yo.

but in all seriousness, id only consider a crossbow or bow if it was a modern day manufactured one, and even then id pick a crossbow because i can focus on using my strenght to prep the shot, then focus deeply on making it land, with a bow i have to do both at the same time! way too much additional effort.

A slingshot would be cool.

They definitely would be, though if you go through the training of using a slingshot, you may as well (eventually) go the extra mile and practice with a bow as well. Of course, slingshots are easier to use than bows, so perhaps slingshots could be a sort of low-level weapon in terms of non-firearm ranged weapons.

a .22 handgun or rifle would come in handy , rather quiet but well you loose quit stoping power. Btw .22 are subsonic so if you shoot humans , they get hit first and then hear the gunshot.

I dont know if im wrong i feel like every time someone brings up bows peopel keep saying that you have to have the right wood etc. I could be wrong but issent there other materials to craft a bow from that requiers less skill, like glass fiber (skis come to mind), spring steel.
Then you have all the outdoors shops that (at least some) sell bows and compound bows for recreational shooting that somtimes are 40 punds +.
But im no bow expert
:/

I've tried some archery. It's difficult, even at close range on a stationary target with a good bow. I hit the targets with my first shots (torso-sized from approximately 10 meters) and the instructor was impressed - most beginners doesn't hit.

So with that in mind, I'd take a crossbow until I had a lot of training with a bow.

Well, a bow needs to be made from flexible yet tough material so that it can withstand all the energy accumulated without breaking or deforming. Bow string needs also to be tough so that it wont snap from all the tension created from pulling it back.

Creating bow from a ski is probably not the best idea since they aint designed to be used that way and material alone in to enough for this.

As for bow made out of spring steel i once saw a Scorpio (Roman balista-like warmachine) made out of traverse leaf spring it was powerful but required a lot of force to load it (saw it no Junkyard Wars on Discovery - very cool show, they made all sorts stuff from junk only) My bet it steel would also require a ton of power to "charge" it.

I have a 65 pound compound bow and if it would be a regular one, god save my arms if i would take long time to aim. Ive heard about bows that even were around 160-200 pounds used in the middle ages... I don't wanna know who the hell used them - Hulk ?

From what i've heard hunding bows start from 40 pounds onward.
