Workshop mods have npcs that you can use while waiting.
If you read the blog and patch notes there is a lot of information regarding current updates and the beyond something post has a roadmap. There is a whole github of information with changes to many mechanics and items not just related to MP, should be in the patch notes and blog posts somewhere.
As for MP, it would be nice if actually finding co-op partners to play with wasn't like finding a needle in a haystack.
Probably a little more to it than that of failed promises, I think features they wanted to add took longer than they expected or didn't work out the way they envisioned. But i don't think it was intentional.
You can use the official discord to find people to play with in the LFG, most who come in there have no issues finding people to play with, if you are not already in there.
Maybe this is the reason, or it's difficult for the developers to create walking paths, sounds, interactions, optimize everything... I don't know...
They should make an option in the future to enable/disable nps and animals in the map. Even if the game have a multiplayer system so the engine could resist..
they look incredibly polished so far so im not surprised they want to perfectionist them for maximum enjoyment
