because the saves are very large and made of a very large number of small files and it could freeze your game for minutes while it copies those thousands of files
but it is a simple process to manually back up your save
plus there are plenty of mods that can allow you to respawn with all (or some) of your experience - and some even might give you your gear as well (but not sure how well that feature works)
but i wouldn't suggest waiting for a manual save feature to be integrated into the game any time soon
This was never meant to be a game where you can save, because you could easily save scum doing that. Oh and I don't know how the auto saves work, but I never had a problem after crashing or losing electricity on this game. It barely rolls back time.
i think the point is that save scumming is simply not possible in this game in the way it is in other games, since it takes increasingly long amounts of time to copy a save the longer you play the game for - you just don't notice when you play since it isn't copying the save - it is continuously modifying the single copy of the save
people can manually copy their save folder - and a manual save button would do the same - but the game would have to be paused, so that the save was not being written to (since if you are copying the save files and some of them change the copy will be corrupted, and possibly unloadable) - and then the player would have to wait several minutes while the save got copied
and so not really much compelling reason to add the feature - since people would almost certainly complain about it - better they just complain about it not existing
personally i would prefer to see a "copy" option in the load menu - as well as a "rename" option
these would be added conveniences for save file management - especially since the load screen is a flat directory space - whereas in reality there are multiple folders (Survival, Sandbox, Challenges etc)
but obviously i can live without them - ctrl c, ctrl v and then rename is pretty easy to do - and a staple of using a PC lol :-)
I haven't really found any reason to have a manual save besides save scumming because even when the game has crashed on me it still saved to the point of the crash.
If you're worried about game corruption use Backups
Also sandbox should be considered as cheating then, cuz u just make it easy for yourself? But then if you want very realistic implementation, why not get successful irl instead?
Save games would kinda ruin the challenge of it.
Save before you dash into a building, die, then load up the save. There'd be no tension, no worry and you wouldn't bother thinking tactically/strategically which for me is the pure joy of this game.
Edit: Or hey, give us an "I am Legend" virus immunity option, that would work too. It's a good idea to let players play the game how they want to play the game. People who play the game like they want to are usually happy, happy players stick around for a long time.
Honestly, this game is nothing like Chess in any way. One day is one hour IRL. It just took me 11ish hours to get to day 20 or so. They SHOULD give us an Iron man option for the sweats that sit at home all day and play video games and 20 hours being wiped out just doesnt matter.
Theres so many people that will never get to the best parts of this game because there is no save button. I mean, without mods... who wants to put 100 hours into a save and have all their hard work deleted when they get bitten once.
I can tell you the overwhelming majority of PC players would want a save feature in this game. Just make it optional "iron man" style. Then you can and should be proud of going really far.
For now, yeah I just backup my saves. Losing several hours sucks, no thanks on losing 100 plus.
You should manually backup your saves if you feel it's necessary. Otherwise, plan accordingly. You've got work in 15 minutes but really want to play Zomboid? Accept the consequences.
How does a save you can roll back to add to the pride of making it 365 days or whatever? Wouldn't that, instead, diminish the reward of actually completing it?
"Oh wow, I finally built the base. Took only a day! I only had to die 10 times, load 15 saves, and spawn in my old inventory!" Vs "I struggled for this base. I've lost people. This place is both my home and a rememberance for those who've fallen. They're buried over there."
That's already a thing, just set "Transmission" to "None" in custom sandbox mode.
