Average cars hold about 40-50 L of fuel (10.5 galons to 13.2 galons). This fuel is placed under the car, with a decent amount of metal "shielding" any explosion there might be. Bigger tank carrying car/truck usualy have even more metal so it should even out. Don't get me wrong This amount of fuel and a flame is dangerous... it's just a tad less dangerous under a car. (edit : at best it might do some minimal damage on the leg level... true damage need a car filled with explosive stuff)
You would probably be better off using the red gas tank and placing thems startegicaly... maybe a propane tank as well ;) ( :D )... Even a small explosive (a fraction of a bullet) might be enough to trigger a gas bomb. A spark might also do the trick, but then you need to deal with some evaporation (a spark inside a full gas tank without oxigen = no fire).
Basicaly, what you see in the movies is either a lot of explosives (and not just the gas tank)... or it's just a movie.
I thinking of a Beautifull Bomb Car, Gas Canister Straped All Over the Car. And In One Shot. A Firework Start and Burn the While City and Its Habitant.
