To answer your question, it's not infinite in the game, and there is also a mod that will tell you how much gas is in any tank in the game
a gallon was something around 3.5l right? regardless of that... thats quite a lot considering how many gassations are on the map
You won't live long enough to deplet 1 gas station. I'm doubt there is any player in PZ history who depleted at least one of them.
In real life, petrol would be bad within 12 months if kept in stable, sealed conditions, 6 months if not sealed - Zomboid doesn't apply this, most post apocalypse media (books/TV/films etc) don't either. It is one of those little things that they ignore for drama and action I suppose.
I had 4000 units stored via the fuel API mod on one save (ten huge metal drums around my base). Once I stored it, I carried on refueling at the same patrol station (that I had been using for months prior), so they hold a hell of a lot.
Gonna try and see how much fuel I can get on Apocalypse, from 1-2 stations at least. Updating when done!
Edit: Someone else's test that I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/comments/optrpl/how_much_gas_in_a_4152_gas_station_gas2go_in/
