Smoking - almost impossible to quit in real life, imagine your chances during Zombie Times. Nope, it never goes away in vanilla.

At the moment in the current game the least permanent traits are Underweight and Out of Shape and their higher point variants, which I'll go into more detail on below as dealing with these kinds of traits are essentially the same.

Unfit, a 10 pointer, will hobble you slightly initially as you won't have endurance, so taking rests needs to be factored in after fights and training will cause sore muscles and reduced strength, however the negative effects are very regular in terms of when they show up, so it's quite easy to have a training schedule that sees ill affects arrive around the time you're holing up for the night.

Very Underweight, another 10 pointer, can be got rid of in 4 days by searching out and eating extremely high calorie foods any time your character is peckish, and eating to the max. Doing this in the early game when there are lots of fresh foods like milk, cheese and butter all over the place is not that hard with a bit of determination.

However, you are in the heart of tobacco country! All counties in Kentucky except one produce tobacco. Even if Knox is that county, gas stations usually have enough cigs to last until you die, usually +/-250

Smoker trait is worth while taking even if gave -4 points, this trait gives cigarrets full stress reduction and 10% flat unhapiness reduction. This means it turns cigs into super light books and you can just dont give a damn about unhapiness/stress. Smoker is the most broken trait in the current build since its pretty much a negative trait that is actually a positive. Without it cigs are just extra junk.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, you CAN quit smoking (as of vanilla 4.1)! You will be a nervious wreck all game, which will then spiral you into unhappiness. But you can quit! I believe in you! Though you will live your whole life craving that cig. And badly.

Non smokers get the 10 unhappiness reduction too. But smokers get 100 stress removed per cig, and non smokers get only 5 stress removed per cig. And if you are irresponsible about your happiness management (like me too), then smoker really is its own kind of buff.

Thats true. Non smoker has infinite matches though. If you play out in the woods or on extreme difficulties, then smoking can cause issue. But in nearly all other games smoking is indeed a buff. Only maybe 1 or 2 games i played in my hours found smoking matches were competing with ability to light a BBQ, and this was on extreme insane difficulty. Though i could get matches from corpses, i couldn't always take the fight or have enough ammunition to take the fights. So i couldn't always loot or leave the LV checkpoint fenced area. On Insane population x4. Day 1 peak.

The smoking was issue there. Because the combat that had to be done in order to loot zoid matches and lighters, or loot zoid cigs, since you can't just loot anywhere with that number of population!

Is there a point of necroing this topic just for this?

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
