Are there mods that fix these problems?
Not one that exists that I know of. The fix is to add the textures, then put them into the game files (like a mod would). It would require an artist to create them first in order to be used.
This might be due to your character's positioning. If you KNOW you can rotate the desk to any of the 4 directions (many can), I've had issues where I can rotate it like I normally could because one of the second squares is "out of range" of the tile my character is standing on. Try walking around a little in the area to see if that fixes it.
Another work around is to move the placement position to another tile, rotate it there, then actually place the furniture on the tile you want it to go.
