Checking ammo in a magazine?

I got this game recently and after learning the hard shotgun noise lesson, I found an assault rifle in the prison. However I don't see any way to see how many rounds are in the magazine. If I tap R my character puts a new mag in but there I did not see any visual indicator as to how many bullets are in that mag. Is there a key to check my ammo or do I have to guess?

Hovering over the gun / magazine in inventory shows the ammo count

Holding R should bring up the radial menu and allow you to check by hovering over the magazine l, believe, which might be quicker.

I tend to just count, which helps to know if the gun jams too.
