So by changing my steam nickname I lose my character on my server
How do I avoid that and change the name?

no you don't because we have to enter our MP names manually so its what ever you decided to call yourself on that server not you steam name

Names are tied to the Steam username, if you want to use the new name you would have to ask the admin of the server to edit the "players.db" file found in the server save folder and change the username there to the new one.

We will tie this to SteamID in the future.
