Character suddenly died
No idea what happened. My character was sleeping. All of a sudden, I woke up in the middle of the night with terminal damage and just dropped dead. My health was good before going to bed. Food and water levels fine. What gives?

39 is extreamly low... my character has the underweight trait and is 70.

I think 35 is the point you lose health though.

Should place your logs in a bug report..

Too many trolls not giving you a real answer in these comments, all I can make this out to be is a bug since moodles weren't a factor which is the only way to tell if you are going to die let alone instantly.

No, it happens if you are under 40.
If you go under 40 weight you die within half a day, basicly you will start to rapidly lose your health similar to having fever.
You could only prevent that with overeating, but even that will not work, since when you sleep you die. This is what happened.

Basicly the character died of hunger.

So rabbit starvation exists. Hilarious.

Are you sure? https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Nutrition#Weight

The wiki says it's 35. Obviously the wiki can be wrong but it's worth being certain. :)

Yes. I had a char die about 3 months ago who was 39 pounds, due to starvation.
I was not able to secure meat with him, due to being winter, and having ill luck at finding canned food that is meat or fish based. (Or even chocolate, ice cream and all these things.)
Allthough it is also possible i forgot to eat with him for 2-3 days, which also leads to starvation death. Even if you are 110 with weight if yo udo not eat for 3 days you die as well. (Starvation or something similar moodle will appear)

Fair enough. The hearty appetite trait seems like it'll be a good negative trait then so you can just eat more of the less substantive food to keep your weight up easier when all the good meat is gone. lol

Even with that using pure cabbage/potatoe diet will not work though.
You need to have some fish, meat or something. So saving up on these things for winter is a good idea. If you start in winter though, that is a different thing:) (1 painful year challenge starts in winter:P)

What i have been doing these days, is usually i eat with my char all the chocolate he can find, all the ice cream until he gains some str. (I allways start with 0 str so makes it harder to carry food with you as well.)
When at base i usually cook some beef/bolognese. Bolognese is quite good as a food base since it gives 10+10+5 to your cooking, and one can is nearly enough for your calorie intake balance a day.

Hearty Appetite is kinda rough to manage now and then, as you will often find yourself either in a situation, where you cannot eat right now, yet the "strenght" debuff already has set in or you have to carry around food and constantly clicking at it, so your char does it.

Its not a bad perk per se, but its a little finicky to manage properly and not in a fun way.

Maybe if you don't explore? with the addition of Louisville though nobody should come close to starving for at least a year even with Hearty Appetite and even if you only eat canned food. It does require you to actually go out and move your ass though looting places.

Try it on insane population:)

My favorite! Though in fairness I don't play with other hardcore settings. I've adjusted things like loot to feel more realistic to me, even if they don't lead to the same game experience. But insane zombie numbers get crazy and I like using that to offset some of the things that make my game easier.

Starvation was not at all my point, I didn't even mention it, so its hard to grab what your counter-argument actually is.
