I turned outlines on because of my eyesight, helps me get an idea when a zombie is in range. Should be in options if you want to do that, otherwise I’d just wack at them while backing up until you knock one over or kill it, then draw the other one out further or finish it on the spot.
If you want to practice pushing though, I’d start on a new save.
Another way to get them to unstack is to walk around and force the zeds to come at a different angle, usually this will cause them to stand in a line instead of a row.
With a bat and about level 3 skill, 10+ zombies is doable with the above tactics. If you need more advantages learn to use windows and fences to cause them to fall down then use manual ground attacks to finish them off.
Hit one zombie with the bat, then push away another one and hit him, step back. Rince and repeat. The advantage of the bat and other two handed weapons aside from damage is range - use it to your advantage. Blunt weapons in particular are also good for knocking zombies down.
Because with a bat, even if the two zombies would be occupying the same exact position (which should not really happen) you should be able to hit one with the bat due to its reach, and in worst case scenario shove the other one. (Even with level 0 in everything. Unless they are sprinters:P)
So there are other things as well that are deciding factors in his encounter, of which we have no knowledge of.
One would need to see the whole equipped clothing in his inventory, his carry capacity, all the moodles affecting him and the health panel of the char to be able to know what the issue is. (All of these can have stuff that affect your fighting and movement speed.)
(I've kited and killed over hundred strong zed horde in melee with short blade/short blunt with endurance 3 or less and str 4 or less chars.)
