Can't skill level through reading/how to drive vehicles
HI, Newbie here.
Completed the carpentry level 1 guidebook, but the skill level did not increase. its the same with other skill sets. Could only up the skill level through watching tv. (have not found any vhs tapes at the moment)

Not really sure if its a bug or something.

side note: tried driving a fire truck, it was in good condition with fuel and all. Tried out all the settings, but the ignition doesnt work.

would be great if i could get some answers here:)) Thanks guys

To the latter, did you have a key for the fire truck? Keys are required to start cars(Or a certain set of skills enables you to hotwire a vehicle.)

To the former, Reading skill books does not in itself give you experience; Instead it gives you an exp multiplier that applies to exp gained. There's 5 books per skill that has books (not all skills do), each one giving multipliers to their associated level range when read. BEginners applies up to a 3.0x boost to exp gained during levels 1 and 2, for example.

Hey, from what I remember back when zomboid was in the earlier stages, books only counted as XP boosts to the respective skill you were trying to do. So, if you read the beginner's book for carpentry, you'd have an XP boost for levels 1-2. Then, read the intermediate for an XP boost from levels 3-4, and so on. Book "readings" are lost on death, just like your skills. However, reading the book and then trying to level up your carpentry (My method was boarding up windows and unboarding them and then reboarding them, not sure if that still works) was much faster than trying to power through the levels.

Skill books boost the XP you gain for the specific skill it says on the book. Reading the entire book for beginners gives you 3x (iirc) skill boost increase.
As for the fire truck. Are you sure its the right key? Do you see a key icon with a red line flash above your character's head when you try starting the truck or are you able to click the ignition and a key gets put into the ignition?

Some vehicles can have a dead battery, especially emergency vehicles that spawned with their lights on. Open the hood, click on the battery and see it's charge, not condition. If it is dead you will need to find a charged battery and replace it or take it out and use a battery charger on it.
