4gb should be fine

so i guess 0.5gb per player

The calculation is 2GB + 500mb per player.

Hard to see but is that a divide or a plus sign? (Sorry for the dumb question..) It looks like a plus tho.

so it's 2GB+500MB which is just (2.5GB) of RAM per player if it's the plus sign?

so 8players X 2.5 = 20GBs of RAM needed...

Is this correct?

No not quite. The calculation is 2GB as a base, think of it as the minimum for the server, then you reserve 500 mb for each player that you are planning to have on the server. 8 players 8*500mb+2gb = 6GB

Ah okay, <3 thank you, and my apologies for overthinking/not understanding fully. Have a great day!

No, it is generally good practice to allocate a bit more than you expect to need. If you find you have more players on at one time than expected, allocate more as needed, assuming the server has enough memory for proper operation.

I'm thinking about starting with the game and was wondering about how that works. Is the allocated RAM then reserved by the game from my system, so if I only have 8 GB and I give the game 8 GB my PC will be kinda slow because the game uses all of that?

It depends on JVM settings, but by default, it's not taken up right away.
The limit is just the maximum the program is allowed to use before it tries to clean up the memory it's already using.
If you have 8GB, and allocate 8GB, it'll only use as much as it needs, until it hits 8GB used, where it'll try to get rid of anything it doesn't need anymore.

leave it at 32gb base and there, most should survive there

By looking at RAM usage with players and with the server alone.
