Project Zomboid

I really don't understand how to make bases safe.
I really don't understand how zombies keep on trying to kick my door down and there is so much of them. I spawned in a big house in a rich part of town on outskirts. Put a blanket over each and every window and only use the back door to exit the house. My friend and I sit in the "safe house" and i'm reading something on my second monitor while crouching and he's reading a book in game. Suddenly a zombie starts banging on a window. I run out to kill him and just managed to knock him down just to see like 7 more approaching. Why. This. Keeps. Happening to me? There were no zombies when i looked arround before we got inside.

Zombies migrate naturally so they could have just wandered over and heard you inside, also their LOS once they've been agro'd is pretty far. Theres a good chance you got spotted on your way back and didn't even realise it. Also it would be handy to turn off zombie respawn, that way when you clear out an area it stays relatively empty

It's a travelling horde.
They are sort of designed specifically to add excitement so you aren't always "too" safe.
It should be said that they didn't just B line to you to attack you specifically, the way travelling hordes work is as they move through the map they want to search the houses they walk into. There is a lot of them at any given time, but sometimes you are just unlucky and your house is in the pathing.
Either that, or somebody was making noise either from moving, tv, radio, or light shining out of an upstairs window or something.
If stuff like this never happened the game wouldn't be as interesting, but I understand the frusteration.

This is why the carpentry skill is valuable. You can reinforce your doors and window, make fences/perimeters. Set up traps and things so they can't reach you so easily.
In the early game you can't do too much else other than what you were doing, curtain all the windows, crouch move when you know they are close to you.

sound is VERY funky in this game, flicking a lightswitch during night is pretty much as loud as a gunshot codewise, so it was probably you doing something insignificant what created enough noise for zombies to hear you.

if you find a sledgehammer you can take the stairs out of a 2 story house and use escape ropes to get upstairs. thats a pretty easy way to make a safe early base in a dangerous location

Thanks we shall turn zombie spawn off then. We are really really new to this game. But does it still mean they would still come from other squares? If so, i'm fine with "kill all zombies to save the world" gameplay.

Okay. We'll keep an eye out from now on. Thanks.

Curtains/and or boarded up windows. If you board up a window enough light doesn't escape. Curtains also work to block light as well as prevent zombies from seeing inside. However, if they walk up to the window, they may still randomly try to break in, if an interaction setting is set to on.

Yes, zombies can still migrate from other areas after youve cleared it but no more should spawn there, so its a lot more managable
