Are car keys universal?
I.E Dart key will work on all Darts?

No, keys you find are usually specific to that car nearest to where you found the keys.

Keys can be found on the ground, in a glove box, in the ignition, or on a nearby zombie (usually more common near game start)

With 2 mechanics and 1 electric skill you have universal keys though - a screwdriver! Hotwire anything and you don't need keys. :)

Weird thing about keys being specific to the car they are found in or near is that once you reload the server or use the key even you can use it on all other vehicles of the same type the key describes..

What? No, it doesn't. If this happened to you then it definitely is a bug, because I have never had that happen in all my time playing.

Yeah, I call shenanigans. But on the topic of hotwiring. It's a useful skill to learn, but carries risks in multiplayer because once the car has been hotwired you can't unhotwire it so anyone can just hop in your car and take off with it. Obviously not a worry in single player without NPCs.
