How to get a car?

I came across about 30 cars and none had a key nearby, how do you even start a car?

How do you hotwire a car?
Is there a key to press for that from inside the vehicle?

Yes. If you press V it brings up a radial menu with hot wire as one of the options.

When you say "nearby" did you remember to check the glovebox or nearby zombies/houses or try forage nearby? I have gotten a key from foraging and several from gloveboxes.

Are you just looking on the ground around them? Make sure to check for unlocked doors, it's common for the keys to be inside the car in the glovebox. They can also spawn on nearby zombies or inside nearby houses.

FWIW in my current playthrough I've found ~10 keys in gloveboxes and ~6 in houses/corpses but none on the ground.

First check for a key.

Check the immediate area. Check the nearby building if it's parked there. Check nearby zombies/bodies. Then check the area around the car (Foraging is your friend here)

If no luck you will have to enter the car and check. If the car is locked I recommend smashing a window furthest from the driver seat with a seat (have a weapon in your hand before doing this)

Enter the driver seat and check the Glovebox and finally the ignition

If there is no key but the car can run and drive your last hope is Hotwiring.

You need 2 Mechanics and 1 Electrical or the Burglar Occupation and a Screwdriver in your inventory. Press the Vehicle Radial Menu (V by default) and select the option to Hotwire. It's a chance thing so you gotta keep doing the option until it is successful

Now you can go Mad Max on them brain eaters

How do you check the glovebox?

I haven't played in a while.

You go to the container tab and scroll over the container icons until you open the glovebox. It'll be the grey box. You can place items in the seats which will be the other container tabs in the car once you get it running and start looting

Its like looting a container. Just when your sitting in the car. You can check seats too but there's rarely anything there and nothing of worth if there is.

Haha yea I just saw that it's like looting everything else, that's pretty cool they really thought of everything, I have a police car now and there's even the lightbar!

I don't think burglars need a screwdriver to hotwire a car, correct me if I'm wrong.

It has a chance of failing. If you hotwire and nothing happens just try again.
