pick axe chopping trees

the pz wiki says you can chop trees with a pick axe but i just tried and it didn't let me any help?

I think you directly attack the trees with it to cut them down rather than selecting "cut down tree" from the drop down.

I just got a pickaxe so I can check.

Pickaxe is classed as an "Axe" but it lacks the ChopTree tag, it only has DigPlow as a feature it can perform. Like most weapons it has a specific TreeDamage value, which should allow you to eventually destroy a tree by attacking it with melee hits, in this case the pickaxe does 35 damage to trees which is quite high - a Wood Axe does 55.

No clue how much health a tree has though, or if beating a tree to death instead of specifically chopping it directly changes the drops you get, since I've never tried it, but presumably it leads to the same result.
