Ignore the 20,000 current in game players and 25,000 peak milestone recently reached, or the recent "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews.
It's totally not worth it
in case you can't tell this is sarcasm
I think this game provides a wholly different experience in multiplayer, making it definitely worth it. There's going to be kinks that need ironing out and there's a couple of flaws like how this game isn't really designed to work like DayZ with the regular loot refreshes, although I think you can set loot to respawn so I dunno maybe it is, but late joining servers can leave you at a significant disadvantage if the zombie population is at peak, or winter has arrived, or there's no gas or functional cars left, or the electricity / water is off, making randomly joining servers less "fun" I guess, but those situations are generally less "fun" for everyone so I guess that's not really much of a point anyway. There's probably always going to be "fresh" servers up. Probably.
Safehouses exist to protect your stash and also limited griefing protection from people coming in and sledgehammering all your walls I believe, and they expire if you don't visit them after a while too.
But I'm not an expert on public games, I only play with friends. I do think multiplayer adds a whole different level of gameplay to singleplayer though, you don't have to do everything yourself (if you work in a group) or it adds an entirely new dynamic and potentially insidious enemy worse than zombies (if you play with randoms + PVP) etc.
Multiplayer is 100% a plus, but I suppose that would depend on your disposition. Judging by the reception the game has gained in the last few days I would say multiplayer is working well enough indeed.
