Randomly shot in singleplayer
in my first playthrough i started out in a hotel, went out to the woods and about after 5-10 minutes of wandering aimlessly in the woods i was randomly shot and killed? is this an event or a map border?

You probably cut yourself open on a tree and didn't notice. If it cuts your neck you'll bleed out it seconds.

i do distinctly remember hearing a gunshot, might be the gunfire event

Gunshot and other sound only meta events are just that, Sound Only. You died from other causes (tree induced neck laceration is a real possibility).

As previous comments have mentioned, sound meta events do nothing but play sounds. You were not killed by a gunshot.

Me and a mate of mine just encountered something like this, but in a Co-op private server. It was and still is just me and my mate, alone, in that server.

We first heard a gunshot East of our locations, for my mate it was distant, for me it sounded like it was shot a block away. After a while, we resumed looting.

About 10 minutes later, I was in our base and my mate was in the forest next to our base. We both heard another gunshot, but instead of it being a distant gunshot, it sounded like it was right next to us. The other thing about this second gunshot, is that my mate actually got shot.

I ended up taking out the bullet and stitching him up, and we both were concerned about how he was shot. There was no other players in the server but me and him.

(We do play with mods, however we don't have any mods that make NPCs or events shoot at us. We have no clue what happened.)

The critical part. What you assume you do not have does not mean you do not have it.
Having multiple mods can cause some undesired, unforeseen things to happen.

For the original poster i would have had the same question if he uses mods.

Probably would help if both momloverx77 and RedNave29 would share their mod lists. That way some investigation can start.

If neither of you shot each other then your mods are altering/adding events that cause it.
Also I doubt it will be the same mods, as the thread is 22 months old.

I have and had actually throughout my whole PZ history 1 mod installed. Pillows Random Spawn:) Nothing else. But many times the strange behaviour that is asked in general questions is because of mods. And many times it also takes a while to convince folks that yes IT IS THE MODS THAT CAUSE IT:)
(Also no clue why these are not reported in Workshop where mod creators usually hang out and might offer some insight about their mods:P)

I do not wish for you to have to read all this, but I have a feeling that you have more mods than I.

Trust me. That is NOT a lot lol. Reading through it is hardly challenging :P
It is however not a good modlist. Things like firearms B41 are not on my 300~400 modlist. They have been replaced a loooong time ago by now.
What I was looking for was superb survivor when I read your issue (which could've caused a true gunshot from a distance), but it seems that's not on there either. That would've made sense. Seems it really was just a fluke death from bleeding out, or perhaps a mod error with something like 'first aid overhaul' or 'better car physics' causing unseen damage to your character (and you either not paying attention, or some mechanic not operating properly to cause instant death on a 'scratch' from a branch or something), and then by coincidence coinciding with the gunshot event. You can try seeing what happens if you get a scratch from a tree with this loadout and see if it kills you. Most of the mods you use I don't use. Like for real, in my 400 modlist there maybe about 20 at most of your mods in there excluding the cars. At least you're moderate in your installs which is a good thing in general.

Made a list of the mods I use (and I tested hundreds of them to create the ultimate modlist for lore-friendly immersion and challenging difficulty etc). Exactly 20 lol (was just a guess at first, now it's a factual number).

Why did I do this? Because this way you know at least these mods are functional and throw no errors in huge modlists. I'm sure a bunch on your list are fine, but at least now you have a starting point when you find out your current modlist is causing weird deaths.

(Also no clue why these are not reported in Workshop where mod creators usually hang out and might offer some insight about their mods:P)

That random spawn mod is a pain in large modlists (I don't use it).
And often the mods themselves are fine, but it's the loadorder that causes errors.
But because people don't understand modding, they simply give up while 9/10 times it's just a merging issue/conflict (which can be resolved by properly ordering the modlist and giving priority to the mods you prefer by putting them at the bottom of the loadlist. Which should be mods like superb survivors, xeno-something for the different/new zombies and stuff like new skills. If you use superb survivors allways put it at the bottom to avoid issues. Which is how you should think about every mod on the list, in terms of risk and priorities in case bugs DO appear later on).

One typical thing that goes wrong is people activate a mod that relies on another mod, and by activating the one that relies on another first, it becomes loaded first in the load order, instead of the one it relies on. Silly stuff like that can cause lots of errors. But by my experience most popular mods can be installed and run together without literally any issues, besides perhaps performance drops. It just takes a really long time to appropriatly install them. Randomly picking stuff from the workshop and yolo'ing the loadorder is not the way to go about it. How you go about it is;
- You segment the types of mods you picked from the workshops in a few categories. Then each segment you activate isolated, your order the load order correctly (read mod descriptions), and then you make a modlist save.
- Then you start that loadout and check for initial errors on load.
- Then you quit the game and pick the next segment/category of mods and repeat with a new save to avoid losing track of your clean load orders.

You allways avoid skizot mods (besides skizot tiles), and you allways leave superb survivors for last, since it allways throws an initial error on load.
Also, you have to realize errors are registered cumulative, so seeing a number in the bottom doesn't mean that number of errors occured.

The segmentation for your categories should be something like;
1) Maps and tilesets
2) Cars
3) Weapons/Armor
4) Tweaks (like washing in the rain, or quick grab, or flip cars etc.)
5) Small increments of "heavy" mods (New skills, combat overhauls, anything large that might conflict with a lot of other mods if you have no understanding of the intricate details).
6) Repeat step five until only superb survivors is left. You shouldn't allow any initial errors on startup until this point. Superb Surivors will allways throw an error on startup so that way you know you've reached the goal with a reliable loadlist. (400-ish is doable, without buggy nightmare crap. I'm the living proof).

So yes, you actually need to make a new game for like 6+ times before you can actually play the game with a large modded list if you want to make sure your time invested in that game isn't gonna end up buggy and glitchy. And I'm sure there's more time-effective ways to do this. But this is my advice to beginner modders that want to learn how to build a decent modlist.

It's a common myth mods cause the errors. It's actually the people installing them (although sometimes mods are just trash, but that's often apparant for even noobies by looking at the amount of comments and awards in the workshop) :)
This is also why the errors are not reported btw. Because people don't know what the error is, and for other people (most of the modders) it just works fine.

If all you use is random spawns... you're missing out friend. Not gonna lie.
Try susceptible mod. It will completely change your experience, and will slow down your need for action and make stuff like grinding non-combat skills more dreadfull.
If you really want to crank it up to the full pro-hardcore experience add stuff like tripping over zombies (which will cause some masks to fall off, making you susceptible to the airborn pathogen, which is a % risk of getting infected from just being close to Zombies), the xeno-something mod I can't remember the name rn for mixed types of zombies (including ones that open doors), and throw in the programmable weather to allow for both cryogenic winters, as well as heatwave summers. There is one mod out there that perfected weather systems by simply making it possible to choose the temperature and downpour levels in the modsettings. That's the one you want.
You can even lower the population this way, which avoids the usual boring gameloop of running circles around zombies with shotguns, instead focusses more on the surprise elements of the game (and a long term experience. My current game has lasted for about 100h right now, and it will probably become 1000h with my current settings being painfully slow exp and all items extremely rare). The true panic and dread of permadeath achieved :)

Edit:
Arsenal(26) GunFighter
Arsenal(26) GunFighter [MAIN MOD 2.0]
Bow and Arrow
Braven's Rappel Kit
Brita's Armor Pack
Brita's Weapon Pack
FuelCraft (not sure if I use this, but something similar I use)
FuelCraft Hardcore (Base) (same as above)
McCoysBunker
Mod Options
MoreScales and 36ovision
Noir's Attachments (not sure if I use this)
Noir's Rifle Slings
ReducedPlank
Torch By Revolution
True Crouching
True Crouching Gunfighter Addon
True Music_v.2.15
Tsar's Common Library v.2.07
Weapon Condition Indicator [41.60+]

Made a list of the mods I use (and I tested hundreds of them to create the ultimate modlist for lore-friendly immersion and challenging difficulty etc). Exactly 20 lol (was just a guess at first, now it's a factual number).

Why did I do this? Because this way you know at least these mods are functional and throw no errors in huge modlists. I'm sure a bunch on your list are fine, but at least now you have a starting point when you find out your current modlist is causing weird deaths.

The next segment where you explained the proper way to install mods and how some people just install ♥♥♥♥ and hope it works describe me and my mate perfectly. Hell, I didn't know you could move the mods in a certain way. I'm used to modding Skyrim and Starfield, where a mod manager does most of the work.

What mods do you recommend I get and what mods from me and my mates mods should we get rid of?

(We don't know ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about modding Project Zomboid so we don't know what's new or old.)

You likely cut yourself on a branch because you ran and then bled to death, there are no NPCs to shoot you in singleplayer.
