Time to perish
How long does it take for meat and vegetables to rot if frozen immediately and left frozen?
I want to know if freezing food is viable for surviving the winter.

Chilling foods in a refrigerator makes them last 10x longer than usual.

Freezing them in a freezer makes them last 25x longer than usual.

Has it changed? Wiki says fridge is x5, not x10, but that info's based on an old version of the game.

Theres quite a bit of stuff on the wiki that is outdated, but im not entirely sure if thats one of them.

Its somewhere between 5x longer and 10x longer, and the freezer is 25x longer.

Bottom line is that the freezer makes most food last longer than the majority of the playerbase can stay alive, while the refrigerator usually has more space but doesn't keep them as long.

Okay, so now I'm doing stick traps, small bird meat rots in 6 days which means 150 days in freezer, enough for winter.
Now it's just figuring out how much small bird meat is needed.

You would need around 5 a day to maintain weight, if you're eating JUST the birds.

2000 calories a day to maintain weight, 260 calories per small bird meat.

Well realistically I always do cooking recepies but I've never been through a winter and I want to be sure to not starve to death.

You can also can food by keeping it in jars. (Don't forget to cook it to fully preserve it!)

And while they do eventually go bad (way faster than actual home-canned food would), you can freeze them (something you shouldn't actually do to home-canned food) and they will last a really long time.

Trapping can be done all winter at full yield, farming and fishing can also be done but farming will take longer and fishing will have smaller yields so no need to stock up an entire winters worth of food. Stocking up on worms and other insects for bait is a good idea since they can't be foraged during the winter.
