They really do seem to pop up out of nowhere, given that I've thoroughly cleaned out certain areas, and they just magically appear anyway.
Even with zombie respawn turned off if the area is empty of zombies the game will migrate nearby zombies to fill the area and even out zombie density.
Eventually you will see less and less zombies if you keep killing them.
How long did it take you to clear the area?
I think the default migration time is 16 in game hours, might be wrong tho.
You can also turn this off too, or adjust it to your liking. eg It takes a in game week before the zombies migrate.
However with my latest settings i am starting to get more of an idea as in what is going on.
Observations only though.
I am playing something akin to 1 painful year challenge settings, i just set the day start to 4 am, and have zombie respawns enabled, and the car alarms upped a bit.
When you start the game, if you spawn in an urban area a lot of alarms will go off.
Later on when you explore the town, and you are within certain distance of a house, delayed alarms will also trigger. Alarms that should have triggered, but did not due to you not being near.
This of course will trigger massive migrations. Meaning certain parts of the town start to become super crowded, while if lucky enough other parts less likely so. However, because of this alarm caused migration, the migration script fires. So to those places that become empty, or emptier because of the alarms, from someplace(you really will have no clue from where) zeds will start to migrate. They can even come from across the map, so will take them days to get there.
In one of the WP runs this is what i encountered. Alarms were going off left and right so i figured i'll see how the things are at Crossroads Gas station. I literally ran into 4(!) bands of migrating zombies. The redistribution setting is 12 hours. I ran into them at 15:00 till 18:00.
On the main road going straight south from WP to Crossroads Gas Station.
The redistribution should have not occured. So something was amiss. Perhaps the alarm has now a very very huge area it covers? Or the redisribution can fire off even before the "game starts"? Since i started at 9 am, and i ran into the migrating hordes as early as 15:00.
I know that the migration, random events and all that kind of things make the Z's move around, and i don't have any problem with that, but i do dislike the fact that they spawn close to me "just to make things harder", i don't want that in my game, for sure.
One hypothesis i have is that, maybe, the Z's dead bodies in the ground are making them to come close ...
So you have 3 full days in game in order to avoid the Z's respawn, right? And, i suppouse the respawn inst progressive, but it just fill the area with Z's...
