Rain barrel not showing in crafting menu
Have my carpentry at level 4. Got the necessary materials and garbage bags are emptied. I'm playing on build 41. Are rain barrels a recipe you have to learn from somewhere?

I do recall on one of my playthroughs there was a program explaining how to build rain barrels on Life and Living, but can't confirm if that was a recipe. Is this true? But that would imply that it's possible to completely miss the chance to learn it.

When you have a hammer in your inventory and right click on the ground, one of the options should be carpentry. Mousing over carpentry will open up several sub-menus showing everything you can craft, whether you have the skill, or the materials or not. I think rain barrels are under furniture and when you mouse over it, it will show if you have the materials and skill levels. Metalworking works the same way with a welding torch in your hand. The crafting menu items are in general only items that can be crafted in your inventory not buildable items if that makes sense.

There is rain collector and rain barrel.
If i recall well the former, the collector is level 4 carpentry, whereas barrel is level 6. Likely that is the issue.

From the wiki they're both called rain collector barrels. It's just one is locked until level 4 and the other at level 7. My problem is that I have level 4 carpentry but nothing shows up.

You should not need a special recipe, when you are in the menu to build the rain barrel does it show any materials missing?

The rain collector doesn't even show up as an option. There is stuff for logs, mortar and pestle, spiked bat, drawer and a couple other things but no rain collector.

I'm looking in the carpentry tab in the crafting menu, unless it's listed somewhere else?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Aaayyy! There it is, lol. I must admit it's weird that it doesn't show up in one crafting menu but shows up in another. These are some of the most abstruse controls I've ever seen but the game is wild. Thanks!

It is because some things can be carried like normal inventory, and others are not like that.
Usually stuff you need to use the pick up option on the sidebar, can only be found with this construction menu.

Also, make sure the garbage bags don't have anything in them. Otherwise, even if you have 4 garbage bags in your inventory, if one of them has an item in it, the game will only count 3 garbage bags.

You can remove the item by equipping it, and unloading the bag like normal, or drop it on the ground and go through the loot menu.

You did not read his post through thouroughly:)

The whole system makes perfect sense and works very well once you know what you are doing, but for new players it is very confusing and not intuitive. There are many "hidden" mechanics in the game that don't show up unless conditions are met which makes them hard to find on your own. I still learn new things by reading discussion posts despite having a lot of hours in the game.

You are correct. I did not read it thoroughly enough.
