How do i get maximum calories without store food?
Need to gain a few kilos, but don't want to invest too much effort, i assume rabbit meat would be the best option? But do i cook it whole, or make stir fry? maybe anything else?

Fishing. I never really did the whole 'go out into the wilds' thing on a playthrough until just recently, but I took nutritionalist and fish have really good calories. I've currently got a camp by the river and it's great.

Why would you need to gain weight? I've been seeing people say this and not sure why.

It's very easy to lose weight in PZ. Most foods aren't that calorie dense, especially the stuff you can forage for or farm. You can stuff your face with berries all day and never gain anything, for instance.

If you go too underweight you get a bad trait (basically a debuff to endurance, strength etc), same with going overweight. You gotta stay in the middle to dodge those bad traits. So i guess OP is underweight and wants to gain some kilos.

Trapping (ie. rabbits) has the advantage of not requiring a body of water and . It also seems to work better in the winter - not really sure about this one, though. My current char has highish trapping (7 or 8) while I've never had a character with as high fishing. Lvl 5 fishing with a spear during winter with my previous char was a lost cause for sure, though.

Cooking instead of eating as is seems pretty much a no-brainer to me unless you're really pressed for time/fuel. Cooked rabbit by itself (ie. not in a meal) has a mild happiness(?) debuff which fish does not.

Making stir-fries or roasts with 3 parts rabbit 3 parts veggies seems to keep the weight fairly steady. Add/subtract meat to manage weight (or eat chips etc. in addition if aiming to put on some pounds).

Fair enough, I didn't know that. I thought maybe there was something else to it that was added more recently.

If you drop to 35 kilos you'll just start taking damage continuously until you starve to death, I believe.

Farm cabbage and make stir fry. Eaten raw gives you about 500-600 calories. You will get sad after eating but can be easily countered adding any other vegetable. There is no better way in my opinion. Other than eating fish. But you need to have water near your base.

The realism of this game blows me away sometimes. I also get very sad when eating a dish of just fried cabbage.

The cabbage game is pretty good. If you’re growing cabbage and using the cabbage gains, grow strawberry aswell. A fresh strawberry x3 counters the cabbaged depression. (Assuming you were not depressed before eating the cabbage)

in RL potatoes have 3-4 times more calories than cabbage. For some reason in game it is reversed.

Fishing, indeed, but mix it with some veggies (especialy potatoes) for added flavor and combining up to 6 food in a pot. The more variety, the tastier.

surprised no one has mentioned the use of bread in their diets. bread is heavy in calories and can easily put you in the over weight category if your not careful. its easy cooking XP simply by making sandwiches/burgers. beef jerky, peanut butter are easy early game items to help maintain weight and even though the bread itself is prone to rotting, the ingredients are non perishable

recipe for bread - good cooking vol 2 magazine
flour, yeast, salt and water w/ rolling pin

1 flour, yeast and bit of salt will make roughly 3 bread dough, that you slice into 9 pieces for 9 sandwiches/burgers, easily a weeks worth of hearty meals right there
