Electricity/Water shut off options
I've noticed that you have very little actual choices here if you want these to stay around for a while. It's either between half a year to a year, or a complete RNG of instant to a year.

Or if you feel like gambling big, instant to 5 years.

Isn't the whole point of 'Sandbox Options" to give players the ability to customize their experience? Why force RNG on this? Or even give so few options, even with RNG.

An option with 3-5 years or 5-10 years would at least give players who prefer to keep water and electricity (without generators or barrels) the ability to enjoy the game as they wish

Isn't this extremely outdated? I've seen comments of people saying it doesn't work with b41

Last comments are from July on the main page of the mod. I've been using it with no problem in build 41, but I'm not on the latest release of it. Up to you whether you want to give it a shot.

Another option is to edit the save file "map_sand.bin"

For instance for me it is located C:\Users\Monty Cora\Zomboid\Saves\Apocalypse\24-10-2021_12-10-14.

You right click the map_sand.bin file and open with notepad then edit the "WaterShutModifier 12 ElecShutModifier 23" settings and save. The numbers are the days your water and Electricity shutoff.

If your water or electricity are already shut off I don't know if it will turn them back on. I just know it will work if they are currently on.

Edit: always make a backup of the file in case something gets messed up.

Alright, thanks you both~

Though my thread is still relevant because I think it should be an option in the vanilla game to have them on for longer, it's called "sandbox" options for a reason, after all.

What exactly do we have to put in? I put in zero everywhere and it still shut off.

Sandbox with no sandbox options..

The number you use is the day it will shut off so you would want to go with 365 or bigger.

I copied the part about shut off. There is 2 numbers though. What are the first numbers for? What do they do?

WaterShut 8 ElecShut 8 WaterShutModifier 192 ElecShutModifier 213

wait. so according to what you said where it says Modifier is the day it shuts off. So that means in my save Water shuts off on day 192 and Electricity on 213?
But what about first numbers? What do they affect? WaterShut 8 ElecShut 8
it says 8.

There was an Advanced Options section where you could configure the minimum amount of time before power and water shut off.

i just dont understand do i need to change only where it says Modifier or all numbers? Even though what the 1st numbers do anyway?? it doesnt make sense.. I found some info on official forums but still doesnt make sense to me..

You will only need to change the WaterShutModifier and or ElecShutModifier to increase the time they will be turned on or to turn them back on if they shut off.

WaterShut 8 ElecShut 8: these are just a reference to what your starting options were when you first created the world and do not need to be edited. There are 8 water and electric options, you can look at them in sandbox settings if you want.

They are as follows:
1) Instant
2) 0-30 days
3) 0-2 months
4) 0-6 months
5) 0-1 year
6) 0-5 years
7) 2-6 months
8) 6-12 months

Basically the 8 just means the original setting was set to 6-12 months.

Hope that helps!

ohhh that makes sense. so 8 means I chose option #8 and the modifier is actually the day it will start at. that makes sense now :). Thank you :)

A slight necro, but.... you cant open bin files in text editors. I mean, you can, but its mostly a jumbled up computer language text. Is that something that changed in the later versions?

this should 100 percent be a vannila option as IRL in the 90s, a fossil fuel power plant in the UK could go 3 to 10 years without human intervention (my dad worked at one and I asked him ) as long as nobody damaged it. (im guessing the US would be the same if not better due to population) and the few renewable sources there were in the 90s if the city had them would provide a small population indefinitely without human intervention unless damaged(google sourced so pinch of salt). This should be an option for vanilla. TRUE 90S mode.

had to add this as its interesting a modern fossil fuel power plants would be months to a couple of years as they are more human dependant now and those ones from the 90s have been slowly upgraded to these over the years.
