Hypothetical wall around West Point
If someone were to say wall off the entirety of West Point and clear the city would it stay cleared or is that too large of an area for the game to check for? Also implied that you're diligently patrolling the perimeter around the clock to make sure there's no breaches or ne'er do wells slapping the walls with their fists.

the respawn starts after X number of hours have gone by in an area you are not occupying. Exactly how large an "Area" is, I'm not sure but definitely smaller than westpoint. That said, if you can enter every area within your walls before X hours pass, theoretically you should be able to prevent spawns inside your territory... maybe.

Afaik, the game checks if there is a possible path from the edge of the map to the place where repawn is about to happen. If there is no possible path (the area is blocked off) it won't respawn zeds in that area.

I walled off the Mall completely with log walls, and no openings. Still in the process of clearing it out, to see if respawn happens inside still.

As TrefanSVK said above, respawn always checked from the edge of the map to see if a cell can have spawning zombies in it or not.

No, it's not possible. At least not in the way you're describing. It may be possible if you sectioned it off into smaller squares, but short of that it leaves areas too open allowing for respawn in most of the map if you aren't visiting every area every day. I'm also not sure what the biggest area you can wall off while stopping respawn.

Edit: I know this to be true, because I tried walling off a large section before and still had zombies respawning within the walls. I think player made structures have an area around them that prevent respawn and if the walls are too far apart, they leave areas where zombies can in fact respawn within them.

Incremental walling off of cities, including WP, is possible if you're careful. What kind of respawn you get is obviously up to your sandbox or game settings. The walls definitely help control wandering hordes and the natural migration of zombs into empty areas. The main difficulty, aside from getting started on the endeavor, will be ensuring the 'weak side' of the city isn't overwhelmed when the helicopter comes (if, say you head east to dodge the copter and then select an open area to fight or simply hole up, the west side that has zombies trying to cross it to get to you might be overstressed and result in a breach or two).

Check out J's videos on his past build West Point fortress and you'll get the idea of a modular gradual walling off of the city and what it'll look like when you're done.

Some fact checking might be in order for this, as I am not entirely certain about the nature of the games mechanics.

From my understanding of the settings the game provides, zombie respawn is based on the cell population, or the determined number of zombies in specified 300x300 tile regions. As per the Respawn Unseen Hours setting description, though, the check whether respawn can occur in an area is determined per chunk, which iirc is a 30x30 tile area split evenly across the cell.

If all of this is correct, to maintain your territory, you will have to render every chunk within to prevent zombies from magically reappearing inside of your controlled space. Theoretically, yes, you could manage the entirety of Westpoint, so long as you can patrol not just the walls, but the whole of the city before respawn is set to occur.

The game mechanics in previous versions was to only spawn zombies in cells that could be reached from the edge of the map.

If you want to fact check it, there was a post a long time ago where a MP group walled off West Point and that prevented zombies from spawning in town. (If my memory is correct, it was EnigmaGrey who posted that.) You would have to do the same to verify that account.

I know of at least one person who's already done this, and confirmed they do not respawn in that whole area. Though that was a while back, so it's possible the devs might've changed it. B41 of course.

The reason I wanted to build this wall is because in 6ML the respawns are ridiculous half of the zombies come back every 3 days and if I built a wall I wouldn't have the downtown and residential pop. coming back every other day pretty much. There'd still probably be a bunch in the woods immediately around the city and on the roads but if I maintained the wall, and respawns were prevented within the area, then I could have some peace.

The effort to build this wall might end up more exhaustive than just looting everything and driving off in multiple trips. The environmental attacks option with 6ML means zombies don't even need to hear anything to start slapping the log walls.

Even without environmental attack on (default settings) meta noises will have them thumping walls. Honestly, you’re going to have a huge amount of respawns while building the wall and it’s going to take weeks gathering and placing all the logs.

I just found a beautiful white Franklin All-Terrain with keys I'm using Def's Long Term Survival so rope's no issue and it also ups trunk capacity to 300 so I'm going to load it with 4 log stacks and drive the route of the wall. The walls going to be up the middle of the perimeter roads for the most part so some houses will be left out but the downtown area will be completely secured alongside a majority of the residences. So without sourcing logs from the nearby area, each load of the car will be 25 walls if I also don't damage the trunk.
