Keep your distance and heavily utilize the space bar for pushing. If one gets too close, remember to push. Keep backing up while hitting/pushing if it's a group of them.

I mean like when i'm climbing through a window or getting in/out of a car i get grabbed by one and i'm locked in place for so long its 100% death

Allways check your surroundings. Do not let yourself be grabbed, remember there is allways a next time to grab the loot, the car, whatever. If you take risks you are bound to eventually fail.

It seems that way because that is what's happening. Don't hang out in a tiny group of zombies. Don't hang around 2 zombies. They want to eat you and maybe you can pull away from 1 but unless you have 10 strength you might not even be able to pull away from 2. Just remember that they want to eat you and the first thing they are trying to do is grab a hold of you and do that. DO NOT willingly stand around them, "tiny" group or not.

I feel like you are seeing one zombie through a window and thinking "I'll just crawl through and run by him..." or there is a zombie at your driver's door and you're like "I'll just get out and run away".

NO. They grab at you. They will grab you if you get that close. Just because it is one zombie (who is at least as strong as you are) doesn't make it safe. Grab and bite. That is what they do. Forget all those stupid zombie games where you fight 50 zombies at once no problem or where they try and punch you for whatever reason... thiat's not this game. They grab you and bite. If you are near one it is latching on to you and not letting go.

I'm only comparing the game to the previous patch, not other games.

Well what were you expecting? When you get grabbed by someone dead or alive you tend to not be able to move as much. Your character is not a superhero that can shrug off attacks and grabs.

Learn how and when to engage zombies especially groups. And never jump blindly into houses or over fences.

If you want to balance your ability to mitigate grabbing and dragging down, you can adjust the 'drag down' values in sandbox by adjusting the strength of the individual zombies, or just disable this completely until you're good enough to play with it enabled. It's up to you.
I just don't understand why its so different from the previous version of the game? its drastically less fun when you can't even engage more than 1 zombie

The downside of this is though, that you will not learn the new combat style:)

I don't really want to, it's sucking the fun out of the game for me entirely, it's demotivated me entirely

Your call, but trust me, it will be more challenging and enjoyable once you learn the ropes.

Same here. I just started playing, and using a baseball bat it takes 5 or 6 minutes of swinging to kill one zombie. By then there's a herd around and I die almost immediately.

Really not much fun at all. You can't heal wounds to keep playing and the melee combat is just terrible.

Hm i would say you just need to get used to the targetting system. Once you get the hang of the range, and the angle it will not be that hard. It requires practice though.

Once you got it you can take on a zombie or two. Thereafter you can practice to take on more, however in normal fight anything over 3 is a death sentence, only moving around and hitting works. (Is the kiting and hitting)
Because if 4 zeds are within reach and they grab you it is game over.

Also pay attention to moodles and clothing.

What Nord said, plus try adding nails to that bat.
